TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT UPDATE | LAKEWOOD STATION

Traffic safety remains a top priority for deputies at Lakewood Station. Our goal is simple—reduce collisions, prevent injuries, and keep our roadways safe for everyone in the community.

Through ongoing traffic enforcement operations and patrols, deputies continue to observe some of the most common California Vehicle Code (CVC) violations contributing to preventable crashes, including:

Speeding (unsafe speed for conditions)
Distracted driving (cell phone use while driving)
Failure to stop at red lights and stop signs
Failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
Unsafe lane changes and following too closely
Driving without a valid license or insurance

These violations may seem minor, but they are often the leading factors in serious and fatal traffic collisions.

We remind all motorists to slow down, stay alert, and drive responsibly. Your choices behind the wheel directly impact the safety of our entire community.

Drive safe. Arrive safe.

Earlier today, Lakewood Station deputies responded to a report of a possible copper wire theft in progress in the 3200 block of Carson Street.

Upon arrival, deputies observed a suspect re-enter the building. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau ( SEB) responded to assist and deployed a drone to conduct a search of the structure.

As a result of the investigation, two suspects have been taken into custody.

Great job to all involved and thank you 🚔

If you see something, say something.

With a rise in copper wire thefts impacting communities throughout the region, Lakewood Station deputies remain proactive in identifying and arresting those responsible.

Recently, deputies took two suspects into custody for copper wire theft in our community. These crimes can cause significant disruptions to utilities, communications, and critical infrastructure, often resulting in costly repairs and service interruptions for residents and businesses.

If you witness suspicious activity involving utility boxes, construction sites, electrical equipment, or individuals removing wire from infrastructure, please report it to law enforcement immediately. Your vigilance plays an important role in helping keep our community safe.

Together, we can help protect our neighborhoods and prevent these costly crimes.

California E-Bike & E-Moto Update (Effective January 1, 2026)

Not every electric two-wheeler is legally considered an e-bike in California.

To qualify as an electric bicycle, a vehicle must:
✅ Have fully operable pedals
✅ Have a motor rated at 750 watts or less
✅ Meet Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 e-bike requirements

A vehicle is NOT an e-bike if it:
❌ Exceeds 750 watts
❌ Can be modified to exceed legal e-bike limits
❌ Travels faster than legal limits on motor power alone
❌ Has had its pedals removed
California has also created a new category called an “Off-Highway Electric Motorcycle” (e-moto). These vehicles are designed primarily for off-road use, do not have pedals, and are not permitted to be operated on public roads as electric bicycles.

Important reminders:
• Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 years old.
• Helmets are required for all Class 3 riders and passengers.
• Legal e-bikes do not require a driver’s license, registration, license plates, or insurance.
• Law enforcement may impound certain electric vehicles that do not meet California’s e-bike definition and are being operated unlawfully.

Before riding, make sure your vehicle actually meets California’s legal definition of an electric bicycle. Many high-powered electric motorcycles and modified bikes do not qualify, even if they are commonly referred to as “e-bikes.”

A recent visit from our furry members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department brought a welcome boost to morale at Lakewood Sheriff’s Station.

Therapy dogs Willowbrook and Charger stopped by as part of the Department’s Employee Wellness Program, spending time with deputies and professional staff throughout the station. These specially trained dogs provide comfort and emotional support, helping personnel navigate the unique stresses and challenges that come with serving our communities.

We are grateful to the handlers and wellness teams who make these visits possible and extend a special thank you to Willowbrook and Charger for making our day a little brighter.

The Flame of Hope made its way through our community today as Lakewood Station proudly participated in the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Southern California.

Deputies joined law enforcement personnel from across the region in a shared mission to support Special Olympics athletes and raise awareness for the importance of inclusion, acceptance, and opportunity for all. Each mile traveled represents our commitment to standing alongside these incredible athletes whose dedication and determination inspire us every day.

We are grateful to everyone who participated, volunteered, and showed their support along the route. Events like these remind us of the power of community and the impact we can make when we come together for a meaningful cause.

We look forward to continuing our support of Special Olympics Southern California and the remarkable athletes who embody the true spirit of perseverance and excellence.
