The Lakeside Fire Protection District in San Diego County, California, is home to over 60,000 residents living in the communities of Lakeside, Eucalyptus Hills, Moreno, Winter Gardens, Lakeview, Johnstown, Blossom Valley, Flinn Springs, Pepper Dr. and other areas of unincorporated El Cajon. September is Firefighter Appreciation Month

This month, we want to take a moment to recognize the men and women who answer the call when someone needs help.

Being a firefighter is about much more than responding to fires. It’s medical calls, car crashes, rescues, structure fires, emergencies, and sometimes just being there for someone on what may be one of the worst days of their life.

It also means long shifts, missed holidays, interrupted family dinners, and time away from the people we love. And behind every firefighter is a family that makes those sacrifices right alongside them.

We’re proud of the people who come to work every day ready to help their neighbors, no matter what the call may bring. They don’t do it for recognition. They do it because they care about the people and the community they serve.

So this month, we simply want to say thank you.

Thank you to our firefighters for showing up, working hard, looking out for one another, and taking care of our community.

And thank you to the families who support them every step of the way.

We’re grateful for all of you.

Today, 8/17/26, we celebrated the arrival of our new Engine 1 with a tradition that reaches back generations in the fire service, the push in ceremony.

Long before today’s modern fire engines, fire apparatus was pulled by horses. After returning from a call, firefighters would unhitch the horses and physically push the apparatus back into the station. As technology changed, the horses disappeared and engines became motorized, but the tradition remained. Today, the push in is a way to honor those who came before us while welcoming a new piece of equipment into service.

Today’s ceremony was more than just pushing a new engine into its bay. It was a celebration of our history, our firefighters, our community, and the responsibility that comes with putting a new apparatus into service.

We would like to welcome home our crew and Strike Team 6840A from Spokane, Washington!

OES 418 spent 25 days deployed, while the crew returning today had been away from home for 10 days. After all the days on the road and working long hours on the fireline, it was great to see everyone back home safely.

We’re proud of our crews for stepping up, answering the call, and representing Lakeside Fire Protection District so well.

Please join us in welcoming home our OES Strike Team 6840A crew after 17 days of service in Prineville, Oregon.

As their assignment came to an end, a replacement crew was sent up to continue the mission as the strike team has relocated to Spokane, Washington.

We thank our returning personnel for their hard work, dedication, and commitment while representing Lakeside Fire, and we wish the oncoming relief crew a safe and successful assignment.

This afternoon, Lakeside crews responded to a vehicle fire on Highway 67. Thanks to a quick response and aggressive fire attack, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading into the nearby brush.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

This afternoon, just after 12:00 p.m., Lakeside Fire crews were dispatched to the 8800 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard for a reported structure fire.

First arriving crews encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from a single story residence and immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack. The fire was knocked down within 9 minutes of their arrival.

One person reported injuries but declined transportation to the hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Lakeside OES 418 has been deployed to Oregon as part of a Type 1 strike team to assist with the Akawa Butte Fire.

As of July 27, 2026, the Akawa Butte Fire has burned approximately 27,382 acres and remains 0% contained. More than 1,000 firefighters are assigned to the incident as crews continue to protect homes and strengthen containment lines around the fire perimeter.

Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness make the biggest impact.

This morning, Gayla Robinson took it upon herself to clean the placards at the Cedar Fire Memorial monument as a simple act of service and respect. Her willingness to give her time to help preserve this important piece of our community’s history did not go unnoticed.

In recognition of her support and dedication to the monument, Fire Chief Don Butz presented Gayla with a challenge coin.

Thank you, Gayla, for helping ensure that the memory of those affected by the Cedar Fire continues to be honored for generations to come.

Today, eight hikers were rescued from the El Capitan Preserve Trail after being overcome by the extreme heat. Lakeside units, with assistance from Barona Fire Department and CAL FIRE Copter 11, all parties were safely removed from the trail, medically evaluated, and declined transport to the hospital.

As we approach the Fourth of July, the Lakeside Fire Protection District is joining CAL FIRE and our local partners in reminding our community that all fireworks are illegal in San Diego County.

Fireworks purchased online, from roadside stands, or brought in from out of state are illegal and can result in fines of up to $50,000 and one year in jail.

Every year, illegal fireworks cause devastating fires and serious injuries. The safest way to celebrate is by attending a licensed public fireworks display and leaving the fireworks to the professionals.

If you need to report the use of illegal fireworks, please do not call 9-1-1 unless there is an active fire or other emergency. Instead, use the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Non-Emergency line at (858) 868-3200.

Help us protect our community by celebrating safely and responsibly this Independence Day.
