Boat Ramp Safety Tips
Launching a boat can be thrilling, but a slippery ramp adds an extra layer of challenge. To start, walk down and inspect the ramp for any algae, mud, or other substances that could make the surface slick. Ensuring your safety begins with recognizing these hazards.
• If your vehicle has 4-wheel drive, engage it to improve traction on the slick surface.
• As you reverse down the ramp, do so slowly and steadily using a low gear. Sudden movements can cause slipping, so maintaining a steady pace is crucial. It’s also helpful to have a spotter guide you down the ramp, helping you navigate and watching for obstacles.
• Continue reversing until the trailer tires are submerged and the boat begins to float. Be cautious not to submerge your vehicle’s exhaust system. Once the boat is floating, put your vehicle in park, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks under the tires for added security.
• Now, release the winch and safety chain. If the ramp is particularly slick, use a rope or dock line to control the boat’s descent into the water. After the boat is launched, drive your vehicle up the ramp slowly. Maintaining a steady speed will prevent your tires from spinning.
By following these steps, you can ensure a safe and smooth boat launch, even on the slipperiest of ramps. Always prioritize safety and take your time. Enjoy your day on the lake!
