FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 27, 2026
Alert: Invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter found on plants shipped to multiple Costco stores across California
The Lake County Agricultural Commissioner is urgently asking residents to take immediate action after the invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter was found on plant shipments delivered to Costco stores across California. Lake County residents who purchased grapevines, citrus plants and/or other fruit bearing plants at Costco stores since April 21, 2026, should immediately contact the Lake County Department of Agriculture at (707) 263-0217.
Special Instructions
Do not return, transport, relocate, or give plants away. Do not dispose of plants in trash bins or compost containers. If feasible, plants should be double bagged in plastic trash bags and seal them closed. Contact the Lake County Agriculture Department at (707) 263-0217 or email [email protected] to schedule a pickup of suspect plants and receive guidance on preventing further spread of the glassy-winged sharpshooter.
Glassy-winged sharpshooters pose a serious threat to vineyards, agriculture, and residential landscape plants. These insects spread the bacterium that causes Pierce’s disease, which can kill grapevines and severely impact vineyards. More information about this pest and Pierce’s disease can be found at
