The Guatemalan-Maya Center is a port of call for thousands who find themselves new in the county and challenged by navigating the services of healthcare, education, and immigration. We are here to help not only the families, but also are frequently called upon by the institutions who find themselves unprepared and inexperienced with the cultural interpretation these populations represent as they s

eek services to acclimatize to new social and cultural norms. Over the past year, tens of thousands of children from Central and South America have been streaming through our borders in search of safety, the comfort of relatives already living in the U.S., and the chance at a new life. Palm Beach County is now home to nearly 900* children refugees who are desperate for a life free from the overwhelming fears of extreme poverty and the very real threats of violence, abuse, extortion and kidnapping. Among its complex and multi-faceted roles in supporting and empowering Palm Beach County’s most at-risk populations, the Guatemalan Maya Center has become a critical leader in family reunification. Click here to see media accounts of these children and how the Center is assisting them to build new lives and reconnect with family. The Guatemalan-Maya Center is a recognized provider of Family Reunification Safe Passages Post Release and Home Study Services Program sponsored by Migration & Refugee Services of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Through this program, the Office of Refugee Resettlement can refer a child to the Center for home visits with their sponsor, assistance with enrolling in school and health care services, including mental health counseling, and referrals for legal representation. This ensures a safe and stable home will be provided to the child while they adapt to a new life and family. We are excited to partner with Americans for Immigrant Justice (AIJ) whose immigration attorneys come to the Center twice a month for consultation and legal representation for children under the age of 18. They see families by appointment only and make referrals when necessary. The Guatemala-Maya Center is also working with Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County and Catholic Charities for immigration support and referrals. If you or someone you know needs legal immigration services, please call our office at 561-547-0085.

Olga lost her case.

After 10 postponed court dates, 6 months of being mistreated in the Eloy Detention Center, and agonizing hours of the children testifying and begging that their mother stay, the judge dismissed Olga’s case and ordered for her deportation.

She will now have to rebuild a life in Guatemala, a country she hasn’t been to in 30 years.

If you’d like to support the kids reuniting with their mom, please see the link in our bio.

Our Escuelita Maya children hosted their first ever concert fundraiser to raise money for their school bus! 🚌📖🎶🎺💘

The bus is a huge need to pick up our kids from school and bring them to the Escuelita Maya, an aftercare program that provides community and educational support to little ones in immigrant families who are dealing with the daily trauma of family separation.

A few of our graduating high schoolers! 🎉🎓

Today our Seniors earned chords and certificates from our SALTT Youth Group for their service and dedication to the community. This year they have lost loved ones to deportation and spoken out against the mistreatment of their community, all while working hard to become some of the first in their families to graduate high school.

It’s impossible to put into words how beyond proud we are of these kids.

Updates to come as they walk across the stage tomorrow 🎉

The police continue to act as ICE in Florida, regularly detaining victims of crime who are only seeking help from what is meant to be a public service.

Since signing the 287(g) agreement, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has one of the highest immigrant arrest rates in Florida and has been paid out $1 million in reimbursements and incentives by the Department of Homeland Security, according to the Marshall Project.

For the past year, our kids have had to grow up too fast.

In a country that often vilifies their families, they’ve stepped into adult roles: advocating for loved ones in detention, helping pay bills, and caring for younger siblings.

This weekend, they got to just be kids again.

Thank you to everyone who made this Disney trip possible. These young people carry the world on their backs and because of you, they were able to set that weight down, even if just for a moment. ✨

For 29 years, Olga Perez has served her community.

One of the few Mam (a rare Mayan language) interpreters in Florida, she volunteered countless hours helping attorneys, doctors, nurses, detectives, and victims’ services. She helped bring justice in wrongful cases, distributed food weekly to families in need, and led a support group for survivors of domestic violence. All while raising four proud U.S. citizen children.

In September, her husband was detained at a landscaping job. Two months later, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) profiled her family’s car and pulled Olga and her children over. Her eldest daughter, who is a U.S. citizen with a valid drivers license, was driving her mom to work. FHP forced all the passengers to show their IDs and then detained Olga. She was taken from her children that day.

Now her eldest daughter, Eliza, has left her hopes of college to run the family business and care for her siblings.

No child should have to give up their dreams because of our broken immigration system.

Please help bring Olga home. Urge Members of Congress to advocate for her release: flic.fyi/Olga

As families get torn apart, they call us to help make them whole again. Yet, nothing can treat the trauma our kids are living through when they come home from school to an empty house because their parents have been taken. We can’t do this work alone. Help us to prepare families in the event of family separation and reunite those already separated at guatemalanmaya.org/donate or at the link in our bio. ❤️‍🩹

Thank you so much to the for making this beautiful video, highlighting those impacted by today’s destructive and inhumane immigration policies.
