Students from Candlelight Christian Academy visited the Lake Wales Police Department to learn about the duties and services that go into keeping our community safe. Students got a hands-on look at the investigative side of law enforcement by working through a mock case and learning how our crime scene technicians process a scene. They learned how to properly collect and document evidence, collect blood samples and even swab for fingerprints.

The visit continued with patrol officers, who gave students an inside look at the equipment and gear they carry every day. K9 Officer Viera also introduced students to his K9 partner, Hunter, and demonstrated Hunter’s obedience training and searching abilities.

We appreciate the opportunity to give students an inside look at the many roles that make up the Lake Wales Police Department and show them the people and work behind the badge.

On Monday, July 20, the female pictured entered the Walgreens located at 24170 Highway 27 in Lake Wales. She selected several items and placed them in a shopping cart. She proceeded to the pharmacy where she acted suspiciously by approaching the counter and repeatedly stepping away, stating that she was in a hurry.

She picked up a prescription; however, identification was not required to obtain it. The cashier at the pharmacy noticed several shopping bags inside the shopping cart that appeared to conceal merchandise. The woman paid for her prescription and proceeded to leave the store. As she exited, she told the cashier at the front that she had paid for the items at the pharmacy. The merchandise had not been paid for.

It is with heavy hearts that the Lake Wales Police Department announces the passing of retired K9 Officer Badge on August 25, 2026.

Badge was born on August 2, 2011, and began his career with the Lake Wales Police Department on November 8, 2012. Through hard work and specialized training, he became a certified K9 Officer on December 23, 2013, and began serving alongside his handler, Chad Landry. On October 26, 2015, Dale Hampton became Badge’s handler and continued serving alongside him until his retirement.

Throughout his years of service, Badge demonstrated the courage, loyalty and dedication that define our K9 officers. He served our department and community with distinction, helping locate numerous missing persons, assisting with significant drug seizures and playing an important role in the apprehension of violent offenders.

Badge’s accomplishments extended far beyond our community. He competed nationwide through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), earning numerous awards and recognition throughout his career. Among his accomplishments, Badge was named Top Patrol Dog and Top Narcotics Detection Dog — a testament to his exceptional training, skill and partnership with his handlers.

Badge was more than a working dog. He was a partner, protector and beloved member of the Lake Wales Police Department family.

Following his retirement, Badge was able to spend the remainder of his life where he belonged — at home with his original handler, Chad Landry, surrounded by love, companionship and the peaceful retirement he so greatly deserved.

Badge even made one final visit to the Lake Wales Police Department to say his goodbyes.

His service may be over, but his legacy will never be forgotten. His paw prints will forever remain on the hearts of the officers, handlers and members of our community who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

On Sunday, June 14, the pictured male entered the Walmart located at 2000 Hwy 60 E in Lake Wales. The individual selected several household appliances and left the cart in the deli section as he walked to the entrance. He appeared to be looking for the door-greeter and after observing there was no greeter, he returned to the cart and exited the store without paying for the merchandise. He then left the parking lot in the pictured white Toyota SUV, which appears to have damage to the driver-side front fender.

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER 🚌
As students head back to school, our roadways will once again be filled with school buses, young pedestrians, bicyclists, and families traveling to and from school. We ask everyone in our community to use extra caution and help keep our children safe.
🚸 Drivers, please remember:
• Slow down and stay alert in school zones.
• Obey posted school-zone speed limits and crossing guards.
• Watch carefully for children walking or riding bicycles.
• Never pass a school bus when its stop sign is extended and red lights are flashing.
• Avoid distractions—put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.
• Allow extra travel time during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal.
👧 Parents, please remind your children:
• Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks whenever possible.
• Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.
• Never run into the roadway or cross between parked vehicles.
• Wait for the school bus in a safe location away from traffic.
• Never approach or accept a ride from someone they do not know.
• If something or someone makes them feel unsafe, immediately tell a trusted adult, teacher, or law enforcement officer.
The beginning of a new school year is an exciting time for our students, families, teachers, and school staff. A few extra seconds of patience and attention can make all the difference.
Please slow down, stay alert, and help us make sure every child arrives at school—and returns home—safely.
📚🍎 Wishing all of our students, teachers, and school staff a safe, successful, and wonderful school year! 🚓💙

🙏 Prayers for K9 Ace 🙏
Please keep K9 Ace, his handler, and the entire Polk County Sheriff's Office in your thoughts and prayers.
Last night, K9 Ace courageously did exactly what he was trained to do—protect his fellow deputies. In the line of duty, he was critically injured while standing between danger and those he serves beside.
K9s are more than working dogs—they are loyal partners, protectors, and cherished members of their handlers and the law enforcement family. Their courage and selfless dedication never go unnoticed.
Please join us in praying for K9 Ace's healing, for strength and comfort for his handler, and for all the deputies and first responders affected by this tragic incident.
Stay strong, Ace. We're all rooting for you. 💙🐾
