Forestry Commission issuing statewide Red Flag Fire Alert
COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a statewide Red Flag Fire Alert, effective at 6 a.m. Wednesday, April 8.

The alert is being issued to strongly discourage people from burning outdoors when weather conditions present an elevated risk of wildfire.

In addition to a widespread deficit of rainfall that continues to intensify drought over much of the state, Wednesday’s forecast includes gusty winds higher than 20 mph and relative humidities under 25% in places.

Because current weather conditions are very conducive to fires escaping easily and spreading rapidly, anyone considering outdoor burning should take extra precautions if they still choose to burn under a Red Flag Fire Alert. Those who have burned recently should return to monitor their burn areas and ensure the dry conditions don’t cause any rekindling.

“Wildfire potential is always higher this time of year, and our use of the Red Flag Fire Alert a few weeks ago made a huge difference in the number of new ignitions,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “This warning is a great tool that encourages citizens to voluntarily postpone any such burning until the alert is lifted. We’re simply asking for people to respect the weather, be smart and stay safe.”

Adding to the danger, particularly in the western part of the state, are the heavy fuel loads that remain in our forests from Hurricane Helene. Not only can these downed, drying trees and other fuels act as kindling, increasing the risk of wildfire ignition and spread, but they also are likely to impede firefighters’ access, adversely impacting response capability.

Although a Red Flag Fire Alert does not ban outdoor burning, it does trigger certain county or local ordinances that restrict outdoor fires, so residents should contact their local fire departments to check whether such restrictions apply in their areas. The alert will remain in effect until lifted by the Commission, whose fire managers will continuously monitor the situation.

Duke Energy Donates $20,000 to Lake View’s Station 3 Fire Department for Emergency Preparedness
The Station 3 Fire Department in Lake View received a major boost in emergency preparedness thanks to a generous $20,000 donation from Duke Energy on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Lauren Griggs, Duke Energy Representative, presented the check as part of the company’s Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) Grant Program, which supports first responders across South Carolina with funding for emergency training, equipment, and disaster response.
According to Dillon County Emergency Management Director Daniel Moody, the funds will be used to purchase a standby generator for Station 3. Moody emphasized the importance of this addition, especially in light of past weather events like Hurricanes Matthew and Florence, when Lake View was without power for extended periods. “This generator will allow Station 3 to maintain 24-hour functionality during disasters,” he said.
Dillon County Emergency Management Director Cliff Arnette echoed that sentiment, calling the donation a tremendous help for Station 3’s ability to respond effectively during severe weather events.
Station 3 Fire Chief Ryan Price and Assistant Fire Chief Jamie Sawyer expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Duke Energy, thanking the company for its ongoing support of the community. Also in attendance were Dillon County Administrator Tim Harper and District 2 Councilman Dennis Townsend, who both thanked Duke Energy and spoke about the positive impact this funding will have for the Lake View area.
The Station 3 grant is part of a $500,000 statewide initiative from the Duke Energy Foundation, awarded through the 2025 HERO Grant Program to 38 nonprofits and government agencies across the Palmetto State. The grants are designed to address critical needs identified following recent severe weather events — including gaps in planning, training, and technology.
Since its launch in 2022, Duke Energy’s HERO Grant Program has awarded 137 microgrants totaling $2 million, helping strengthen emergency preparedness across South Carolina just in time for the hurricane season.
With this donation, Station 3 will be better equipped to serve the Lake View community when it’s needed most.

Dillon County Station 3 receives $20,000 donation from Duke Energy to better serve the community during storm disasters.

Duke Energy supports first responders with $500,000 in grants for emergency preparedness in South Carolina.

HERO Grant Program will pay for training, equipment and new technology to aid in response to weather-related disasters.

Funding goes to 38 nonprofits and government agencies across the Palmetto State.

As hurricane season begins, community leaders, emergency managers and first responders turn their eyes to the tropics as they continue to prepare their communities for the possibility of impacts from severe weather. Duke Energy is preparing, too.

What's happening: Duke Energy Foundation is awarding $500,000 through the 2025 Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) Grant Program to support severe weather emergency preparedness across South Carolina.

Where the money is going: More than three dozen government agencies and nonprofits are receiving grants up to $20,000 each. The grants will fund training, life-saving equipment and innovative technology identified as gaps or needs following recent severe weather events – all aimed to aid in weather-related disaster planning and recovery operations. A complete list of recipients can be found here.

Why it matters: Hurricane Helene and other severe weather events in recent years have had historic impacts on South Carolina – forever changing lives and landscapes. These storms have forced communities and their first responders to rethink how they prepare for future severe weather events. Duke Energy Foundation microgrants will help local governments and nonprofits improve their training, planning and responses.

By the numbers

This is the fourth year of the $500,000 annual microgrant program – bringing total support to $2 million.
Since 2022, Duke Energy’s HERO Grant Program has funded 137 microgrants, delivering critical support to nonprofits and local agencies across South Carolina.

What they’re saying

Tim Pearson, Duke Energy’s South Carolina president: “The one thing our company and communities learned in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene is you can never be too prepared for severe weather events. Now more than ever, we are committed to providing our fellow first responders the tools and training they need to handle whatever Mother Nature throws our way.”
Nicholas Ray, Deputy Chief, North Spartanburg Firefighters Foundation: “The addition of this drone will enhance a vital cache of rescue equipment that was previously provided by the HERO grant program and has saved numerous lives, most recently during Hurricane Helene. Duke Energy’s continued support of fire and rescue projects demonstrates their compassion to serve their service communities in preparation for natural disasters.”
Shannon Tanner, Fire Chief, City of Florence Fire Department: “Reliable communication is the backbone of effective emergency response, and during recent severe weather events, we’ve experienced firsthand how dangerous gaps in communication can be – for both our firefighters and the citizens we serve. This funding will allow us to implement a much-needed vehicle repeater system, enhancing our ability to coordinate resources, protect lives and maintain operational control when conditions are at their worst. We’re grateful for Duke Energy’s continued partnership and commitment to helping communities like Florence build resilience where it matters most.”
Dr. Mandy Gattis, Project and Grants Manager, South Carolina EMS Association: “During Hurricane Helene, EMS response resources were assembled in an ad hoc manner due to the absence of structured teams, highlighting the need for a more coordinated and efficient approach. This funding represents a vital step toward building a more coordinated, rapid and effective medical response network for future large-scale emergencies. With this support, we are committed to enhancing disaster preparedness and saving lives across all regions of South Carolina when every second counts.”
Justin Turner, Emergency Management Director, Marion County: “The past offers us valuable insights into the outcomes of previous disasters; insights we can study, record and learn from. This knowledge empowers us to make informed, critical decisions for our communities. By learning from history and planning ahead, we equip ourselves to face the uncertainty of tomorrow’s storms.”
