If youâve driven through Old Bridge and Occoquan Road lately, youâve likely seen a familiar corner changing. The former Pizza Hut - later used as a church - is being taken down as part of the long-awaited Old Bridge Road / Occoquan Road intersection improvement project. The corner is part of one of the sharper, more awkward sections along Old Bridge Road. The curve can be stressful and unforgiving, especially in poor conditions.
I understand this all too well: on a rainy night, a family friend recently overturned her car on this stretch.
This project is about improving safety by realigning the intersection, removing the sharp curve on Old Bridge Road, and upgrading pedestrian facilities with ADA-compliant crosswalks, a pedestrian refuge island, and more buffer between sidewalks and traffic. It is not primarily a road-widening or capacity project, though it does include turn lanes and engineering improvements that should help traffic move more safely and predictably.
I know construction is never convenient, especially along a corridor so many residents use every day. But this is one of those projects where the short-term disruption is tied to a safer, more functional intersection for drivers, pedestrians, and nearby neighborhoods.
Iâll continue sharing updates as this project moves forward. Stay safe.
