Our Scavenger Hunt is Here! A friendly reminder that the Lake Placid Historic Scavenger Hunt is this week on Thursday, September 17th, from 5:00PM-7:30PM!

Organize your transportation, put together teams of 2-4 people, and plan to meet at The History Museum at 5:00PM to get your clues! You will then follow the clues around town to find secret historic spots... After you explore, there will be food, drinks & prizes at the museum! You’ll be surprised to find out the history of these locations and you’ll be able to test your knowledge! Be sure to join us this Thursday for a great time!

25 years have passed, and history will never forget those who were lost, nor will it lose sight of the heroes on September 11, 2001. Today we remember those who have passed and honor the first responders, volunteers, and selfless individuals who worked to save their fellow Americans, many even giving the ultimate sacrifice to help. The legacy of every individual will live on even if they aren’t with us today. The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society sends love to all affected by the events of 9/11 and always will. ❤️ 🇺🇸

Happy Labor Day Monday! This week's Monday Moment showcases a truck filled with scrap metal parked in front of what we believe to be the Olympic Arena on a sunny day with a sign to the right that reads "Ice Skating Daily!" The scrap metal being collected is likely for the National Scrap Metal Drive, which took these materials and turned them into aircraft, jeeps, tanks, and other warfare materials for World War II! Have a great week!

We are excited to share with you our next event at the History Museum! Join us for an engaging, in-depth discussion and presentation by Dave Fadden and Curt Stager about their new book, The First Adirondackers!

The First Adirondackers challenges the widespread, long-standing belief that the Adirondack uplands of northern New York were uninhabited before the arrival of European colonizers. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Through local indigenous traditions and supporting findings by natural science, authors David Kanietakeron Fadden and Curt Stager expose, document, and honor the long human presence in the Adirondacks, helping not only to redefine what it means to be an Adirondacker, but also contributing to a more complete understanding of America itself.

With two incredible presenters full of information and excitement around the topic, this is bound to be a presentation you won’t want to miss!

We came across this photo from our collections and feel it is perfect to share for a Monday Moment! An epic snow race is ensuing in this wintery picture from 1940-1950! You can see three horses, sulkys, and drivers racing on an outdoor track near the LP Airport and Horse Show Grounds! We know that the front rider is Favor Ransier Smith, the second rider is either Hurley Devlin or Vern Devlin, and the third rider is either Norm McCasland or Verne Devlin! What a time this must have been! Do you remember races like this?
