Thank you, Community of Brazosport, for your support of our many Rotary Shrimp Boils. Due to the success of our last fundraiser, we were able to make donations back to the community using the criteria of health, hunger, and humanity.
Funds from our 2023 Shrimp Boil went to Junior Achievement’s Financial Literacy classroom materials, digital education programs for the Pregnancy Help Center, “Diagnosis: Dementia” booklets for the Brazoria County Gathering Place Interfaith Ministries, classroom programs and supporting books for BISD school libraries for Birds of Prey with the Friends of Brazoria Wildlife Refuge, photo frames for prom pictures for A Night in the Spotlight for special needs students, and books for BISD first grade children with the Janice’s Storybook Summer project.
In addition to the donations, we give dictionaries to each third-grade student in the Brazosport area every year. Brazosport Rotary grants $40,000 in scholarships to high school seniors each May, as well as hosts a teacher appreciation luncheon. We hold Safetytown for soon-to-be BISD first graders every June, now in its 36th year! Our commitment to “Service Above Self” includes partnering with Harvest for the Hungry, The Salvation Army bell-ringing and angel tree gifts, replacing the span bridge plus monthly work days at the Lake Jackson Plantation site, building palapas after Hurricane Ike to help Surfside Beach, delivering Operation Turkey Thanksgiving meals, and planting 92 crepe myrtle trees at MacLean Park. On a global level, we work towards ending polio and support the Guerrero Surgery and Education Center in Mexico, founded by Dr. Tom Pruett.
Past donations were made to Brazosport and Brazoswood Project Graduations, fans for senior citizens to keep cool through ActionS, Inc., drone equipment for the Brazoria County Sheriff office, lumber to build beds at The Warriors Refuge for veterans, a Rescue Spreader Device for the Lake Jackson Fire Department, four computers for the kiosks at the Arts and Science Center Planetarium, and five mechanical lifting devices for the ambulances at the Lake Jackson EMS.
Our Shrimp Boil is held so we can continue to benefit the community. We can only be of service because we are supported by the generosity of the Brazosport businesses, industry, and individuals. On behalf of Brazosport Rotary and the donations committee, thank you for helping us make a difference. Rotary will be at the Doris Williams Civic Center in Lake Jackson on Saturday, March 9th, and we anticipate another successful Shrimp Boil. Thank you again for your tremendous support!
