Right off the Bat-School has only been in session for three weeks and our youth council is already raising funds in the community for our local veterans softball league!

Way to go Amiya Lin, Ashlynn Garry, Brynlee Williams, Taylor Hobday, Lily Miller, Raiden Saari, Maya Dolan, Rilee Thuneman, Emma Trejo, Alayna Green, Kaysen Blomenkamp, Jake Crook, and Sienna Anderson!

Havasu Youth Advisory Council has partnered with Sunland Asphalt and Construction, through Lake Havasu City native, Greg Hughes, to help the Echo Group Band of Brothers Arizona organization with their initiative to start a veteran softball league in the area.

The Echo Group Band of Brothers Arizona, a 501c3 based in Lake Havasu City, is ran by a local Board, led by Co-President and Chapter President Stacy Lee. Echo Group Band of Brothers Arizona is dedicated to their brothers and sisters in the veteran community. They work closely on initiatives that directly affect veterans through competitive veteran sports leagues like softball, bowling, and pool.

Sunland Asphalt and Construction, based in Phoenix, has a program called Sunland Cares. Doing their part year-round, volunteering and giving back to local organizations across all their divisions nationwide connecting with non-profits. Project Engineer, Greg Hughes, born and raised here in Lake Havasu City, heard about the need for the funds to help kick off the veteran softball leagues first season, and brought the request to the Sunland Cares Committee. Not only did the committee agree to pay for the first season, but instead offered to pay for the first two seasons and provided a check to the Echo Group in the amount of $5,000 at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Havasu Youth Advisory Council is currently working with the Echo Group to raise more funds through merchandise sales, such as hats and t-shirts, and plans to promote and kick-off the league’s Opening Day, scheduled for September 30th.

The Mayor’s Havasu Youth Advisory Council (HYAC), partners with the Havasu Community Health Foundation Food bank to host a food drive called “Operation Restock the Food Bank” during the month of March. Participating partners include LHUSD No. 1, Bashas’, Food City, and Smith’s Food and Drug; Parks and Recreation Afterschool programs; and all City departments.

In conjunction with the month long collection, HYAC will offer a drive-thru collection event at the end of March on Saturday, March 27, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon at the food bank located at 1980 N Kiowa Boulevard. All are invited to join HYAC in donating canned food items to individuals and families in need within the community and dropping them off at the drive-thru event. No need to get out of your vehicles. Simply pack your trunk with the food donations, pull into the drive-thru, and pop the trunk; HYAC will do the rest. All non-perishable donations are welcome, but special requests this month are for canned meat, canned fruits and vegetables, canned beans and chili, canned tomatoes, pastas and sauces, soups and crackers, peanut butter, and cereal.

In October of 2020, HYAC partnered with the Chamber Foundation for Education and Leadership to host a socially distanced Drive-in Movie event to help raise funds for the food bank before the holidays.

“Through their volunteerism and service, HYAC is passionate about giving than receiving, especially for those in need following the holidays with their Operation Restock the Food Bank food drive. I encourage all those who can, to donate to this worthy cause,” said Mayor Cal Sheehy.

Congratulations 2020 LHHS graduates Cheyenne Halfacre-Buie and Ella Wofford. Both joined Havasu Youth Advisory Council (HYAC) as Freshmen making many memories (losing Ella her freshman year... nearly running out of gas in the middle of nowhere their senior year...winning competitions...all the road trips...the bonding...visiting Arizona universities, the League of Arizona Cities and Towns youth programs, raising funds for teacher retention and su***de prevention...and overall making a difference) over the past four years.

We are grateful for the time we spent with both Ella and Cheyenne, we congratulate them, we thank them for their contributions to the City, and we wish them well in their future endeavors.
