Public libraries have always been the “keepers of record” with their local history collections—containing books and artefacts, providing access to newspaper archives and databases, and offering related programs.

Just a quick newspaper archive search of a random year (1982) resulted in several articles and notices about genealogy events at our library. Workshops covered topics such as “Indexing Cemeteries,” “Irish research,” and “Land settlement in Southern Sawyer County.” [Chippewa Herald Telegram, Feb 18, May 20, Oct 22, and Nov 5, 1982]

While local groups still meet in person, the access to online events was not the same in 1982 as today. We would like to promote the open for all (and free) webinars organized by the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society. Pick up a sheet with registration info at the Information Desk.

We are pairing this resource with the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, which kicks off on June 1. This year’s theme is “Dig into the Past and… Unearth a Story” which can relate to not only human history and genealogy, but also archaeology and paleontology. ⛏️

(The display with book suggestions and reading logs will be available on June 1.)

More behind-the-scenes tips and tricks from CFPL:

Have you or your child ever accidentally torn a library book? Has the binding gone out on a large and/or older book as you read it? Did a page fall out of a paperback book?

These things happen! You probably won't be charged for small tears or other normal wear-and-tear on your checked out CFPL library books.

CFPL library staff use special tapes, glues, and tools to put lightly damaged materials back together again. We have training and experience to mend materials so the community can continue to use them.

If you come across a tear or you accidentally rip pages in a book - please DO NOT try to fix them yourself. You may further damage books and may be charged for using personal tapes and glues on library materials. Bring the damage or rips, no matter how slight or severe, to our attention and we will take it from there. It is much better for library materials, you, library staff, and future borrowers.

Thank you.

We recently restructured the Children's Area and collections to both open sightlines and to cut down on the temptation to run through long aisles. You'll still find your favorites - playaways, DVDs, magazines, play area - just in slightly different locations. If you need assistance please see Youth Services staff and we will gladly assist you.

Please expect some additional rearranging in the near future while we update signage, find homes for our smaller collections (back issue magazines, etc.), and see how children and their caregivers use the space in this new configuration.

We recognize changes are often difficult for many people (of all ages!) or can throw off a routine. If you have someone in your care who needs to have information about changes in advance, please share this with them to give them a head's up.

Please remember that young children should never be left alone in the Children's Area and to assist children as they use the library space and materials. Young ones are still learning so it is important to model good behavior, in addition to supervision by and gentle guidance from their caregivers.

(We did not remember to take "before" photos, so please enjoy a smattering of "during" photos, taken Friday evening as Youth Services staff worked on cleaning and rearranging.)

Thank you for being a friend! 😀

We want to thank our volunteer organization, Friends of the Chippewa Falls Public Library, for their dedication in raising funds for our library activities.

This month we highlight Royal Credit Union, whose donation has helped us acquire supplies for the library’s popular Spice Club. Every third Wednesday of the month we prepare a kit for patrons to pick up, containing a bag of the month’s spice, an info sheet, and a few recipes.

RCU is a very local Chippewa Valley initiative, it was started in April 1964 by employees of the Uniroyal Tire Company in Eau Claire. Today RCU has expanded into other locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota, serving more than 300,000 Members.

Thanks, RCU, for being a library friend!
