Sharing a few more pictures from yesterday’s 9/11 memorial events as we honored and remembered the lives lost 25 years ago.

A special thank you to Covenant Community School for having Chief Wehinger as their guest speaker and for helping keep the memory of 9/11 alive for the next generation.

Thank you also to everyone who attended the memorial at the Public Safety Building. Your presence and support meant a great deal to all of us.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET DAY

This morning, we gathered for the 25th Anniversary September 11th Commemoration hosted by the Lake City Police Department and the Lake City Fire Department.

Through this powerful ceremony, we reflected on the day that changed America forever, twenty‑five years ago. We shared memories of that morning, honored the heroism of those who stood against terror, and reaffirmed our commitment to remember how our nation came together on September 12th.

Thank you to Police Chief Gerald Butler, Fire Chief Josh Wehinger, Assistant Police Chief Andy Miles, Assistant Fire Chief Ret Tompkins, Representative Kat Cammack, Mayor Noah Walker, Brent Kuykendall, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Honor Guard, and everyone who attended and remembered this day with us.

Mayor Noah Walker proclaimed September 11, 2026, as “We Will Never Forget Day” through a special proclamation presented to the community.

Today marks five years since we lost Chief Randell “Randy” Burnham to COVID-19.

Chief Burnham dedicated his life to serving his community and the fire service. His leadership, friendship, and commitment to those around him left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

Five years later, he is still remembered, still missed, and never forgotten.

Lake City, FL — September 3, 2026 — At approximately 11:45 a.m. this morning, units from the Lake City Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at NW Burk Ave.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of the residence. Fire crews quickly determined that the fire was located within the attic space and began operations to contain and extinguish the fire.

Three dogs were successfully rescued from the residence. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the attic area; however, the residence sustained sufficient damage and is currently considered unlivable. Five occupants have been displaced as a result of the fire.

The Lake City Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Lake City Police Department, Columbia County Fire Rescue, and AmeriPro Ambulance.

The cause of the fire was due to faulty electrical wiring in the attic space.

Update 9-3-2026 1:30 pm. The fire has been fully extinguished. Three dogs were saved from the residence by fire crews. Due to multiple layers of roofing materials on the structure, crews had to spend an extended time assuring that all fire was extinguished. At this time crews are packing up to clear the scene. No injuries have been reported, one male resident was evaluated for previous medical issues.

‼️ADVISORY‼️ Please avoid NW Burk Ave and US 90 as our crews are on scene working a residential structure fire. All occupants are out and unharmed at this time. Updates to come.
