⚠️ SCAM WARNING ⚠️

We want to make the public aware of a nationwide scam targeting individuals and businesses involved in planning, zoning, land use, and permit applications.

Scammers are sending fake invoices and payment requests that appear to come from legitimate Planning Departments. These emails often use official-looking letterhead, department logos, names of real staff members, project addresses, application numbers, and other publicly available information to appear legitimate.

In some cases, scammers are believed to be using automated AI tools to scan public planning applications and generate convincing fraudulent invoices.

This is not an isolated incident. Similar scams have recently been reported by local governments and agencies across the United States, including in Minnesota, California, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Connecticut.

🚩 Common red flags include:
• Requests for wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or peer-to-peer payment apps
• Emails from suspicious or slightly altered email addresses
• Unexpected “processing,” “review,” or “approval” fees
• Pressure to pay quickly to avoid delays or denial of an application
• Attachments or links that seem unusual or unexpected

✅ Protect yourself:
• Verify invoices directly with the agency using official contact information
• Do not rely solely on phone numbers or links provided in the email
• Be cautious when opening attachments or clicking links
• Never send payment without independently confirming the request

If you receive a suspicious invoice or email related to a permit, zoning, or planning application, contact the appropriate agency directly before making any payment.

Please help spread the word to protect others from becoming victims of this scam.
