A complete, full weekend shutdown of Interstate 285 is scheduled on the west side of Atlanta from Friday, June 5 at 7:00 p.m. until Monday, June 8 at 5:00 a.m. Both northbound and southbound lanes will be fully blocked between SR 139 / Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive (Exit 9) and Cascade Road (Exit 7).
Closure Details
• Location: I-285 between MLK Jr. Drive and Cascade Road
• Timeframe: 7:00 PM Friday, June 5 – 5:00 AM Monday, June 8
• Scope: All general purpose lanes are fully shut down.
• Reason: The Georgia Department of Transportation requires the continuous closure for concrete grinding, slab repairs, and major equipment usage as part of the 10-mile Westside rebuild project.
Recommended Detours
Expect severe congestion across the broader metro Atlanta interstate network. GDOT strongly recommends avoiding the area, but if you must travel through, official detours include:
• Southbound I-285 Traffic: Drivers will be diverted at the MLK Jr. Drive Exit (Exit 9) to I-20, and rerouted to I-75/I-85 southbound.
• Northbound I-285 Traffic: Traffic will be redirected off the interstate at Cascade Road (Exit 7) to SR 166 / Langford Parkway.
• Airport Access: Drivers headed to Hartsfield-Jackson from the west or north should utilize the Downtown Connector (I-75/85) rather than the west perimeter.
You can track traffic backups and detours in real-time by checking the 511 Georgia App.
