UPDATE: June 11th, 5:43 p.m.

Crews have worked to allow alternating traffic to begin flowing on Hwy 50 using a pilot vehicle. While the fire crews have contained the fire, they will be continuing to work in the area.

With emergency vehicles and crews still in the area, please be respectful of their presence and avoid the area if possible.

PUBLIC NOTICE: Mag Chloride application on all Hinsdale County dirt roads will take place on May 27 and 28, 2026.

Mag Chloride sinks into the dirt roads fairly quickly after application. However if you do get some on your vehicle, it washes off with water if done quickly. A pressure washer will take it off if it does dry on the vehicle.

2026 OHV HIGHWAY PROGRAM

The Hinsdale County/Lake City OVH Program starts Monday, June 1 and continues until Wednesday, September 30. The program allows OHVs to travel on Hwy 149 from CR 30 to Ocean Wave Dr.

The CDOT Transportation Commission has approved the Hinsdale County/Town of Lake City OHV Highway program to continue for ten years, starting in 2026.

The ten-year permit was approved by the Transportation Commission following approval by a majority of Hinsdale County voters to an advisory ballot question in November, 2025. At the end of each summer, Hinsdale County, Town of Lake City and partners will continue to review the program and provide CDOT with a season-end report.

Stage 1 Fire Restrictions - Southern Hinsdale County
May 22, 2026

This morning County Commissioners implemented Stage 1 fire restrictions in Upper Piedra area of the southern portion of Hinsdale County. These fire restrictions match the same actions put into place this morning in the San Juan National Forest in the Upper Piedra area. Fire restrictions do not include the Weminuche Wilderness portion of the forest. Attached is a map showing the area in the southern portion of Hinsdale County that is now under Stag 1 fire restrictions.

There are currently no fire restrictions in the northern area of Hinsdale County or in the Lake City area.

In Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, prohibited activities include any outdoor fires – including grills and barbecues -- on public lands unless in a developed recreation site or campground. Outdoor fires on private property must be in a permanent fire pit. Private fireworks, explosives, smoking outdoors unless in a three-foot area cleared of all flammable materials and welding unless in a ten-foot cleared area are all prohibited in Stage 1 fire restrictions. Fires in permanent fire pits & grills on private property are permitted as well as camping stoves in recreation sites or campgrounds.

We are welcoming the community to our new County Operations Building, home to the Hinsdale County Sheriff Office, Administration and the Building Official! We are inviting the community to our ribbon cutting on June 10 at 11 a.m.
