This past weekend, Lt Joseph Voiles competed at the Arnold Sports Festival Worlds Strongest Firefighter. This 2 day event brought in over 100 firefighters from across the world to compete for the title. Lt Voiles put on a strong and valiant effort on day 1 of the competitions At the end of the day he found himself in 5th place and qualified for a spot in the finals, which took place on day 2. The finals showcased 3 events including an ambulance tire axle press, silver dollar deadlift and a fire hydrant load to a platform. Lt Voiles put his heart on the line and gave his best effort. When the dust settled, he found himself in 7th place overall.
We are truly honored to have an individual like Lt Voiles represent Cedar Area Fire & Rescue

CPR Alive – CPR Induced Consciousness

How many of you who use the LUCAS device for CPR have had your patient gain consciousness due to adequate cerebral perfusion? I've met many of you who have, and my question is, what do you do when this happens? Assuming they don't have a pulse on their own and go unconscious when CPR stops.

Is your patient aware enough to be suffering? Do you sedate your clinically dead patient? Sounds like an odd question to ask, but I wonder if you have a protocol for this. I've met many of you where this happened, and I haven't heard of any protocols to minimize the patient's suffering.

I've never had this happen to me as a medic, but I can imagine the stressful dilemma this would cause for me and having a protocol in place would make that decision easier. What are your thoughts on this?

A big thanks to the crew at Missaukee County EMS in Michigan for helping me with this one.

Stay safe, everyone,
DanSun
