ITS OFFICIAL!!! 🤗🎉

08/28/2026

We're so excited to announce FOUR major office openings across the state! LCRF now has permanent presence in Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge and on LSU's main campus. We know Louisiana stands with us for bodily autonomy and maternal health. By organizing communities from every corner of the state, we will make reproductive freedom a kitchen table issue... and then we'll take back our rights AND BEYOND! Someone in your life is carrying this risk right now.

Louisiana’s maternal death rate sits at 41.9 per 100,000 births. That’s more than double the national average of 18.6. Researchers found a 9.2% increase in pregnancy-associated deaths across states with abortion bans. That’s not a policy debate. That’s 68 people a year in Louisiana. 68 somebodies. Somebody’s parent, sibling, best friend.

When reproductive care gets restricted, real people in our communities pay the price.

If this matters to you, come chat with us. LCRF Southwest hosts our Community Connections meeting this Friday, August 28th at Central Library in the DeBakey Room from 6-7pm. Come learn, connect, and be part of the solution.

Because solving a problem begins with understanding it. đź’š

Southwest Louisiana deserves access to reproductive healthcare. That’s not a someday goal. That’s what we’re building right now!

Tomorrow, August 19th, our Community Care: Opill Pop-up puts free bags with a 3-month supply of Opill, condoms, and local health resources directly in our community’s hands. Come get one. Send someone who needs one.

We’re also a resource for emergency contraception. Reach out anytime.

Find us monthly at Central Library:
📚 RJ Book Club - First Tuesday
🤝 Community Connections - Last Thursday

And catch us on campus and in the community at upcoming McNeese, SOWELA, and In the Spirit of Woodstock events.

This work runs on community support!

$15 brings someone into our book club.
$20 puts birth control in someone’s hands.

Every dollar builds a more equitable future for reproductive health in SWLA.

What is a maternity care desert?

At first glance, it sounds like a term that only applies to pregnancy or childbirth.

But it’s really about something much bigger: access.

A maternity care desert is a community where people have little or no access to maternity care because hospitals have closed labor and delivery units, there aren’t enough providers, or care is simply too far away to reach easily.

When that happens, the effects ripple throughout the entire community.

Expectant parents may have to travel hours for prenatal appointments or to give birth. Emergency departments take on additional responsibilities. Healthcare providers become stretched even thinner. And when a healthcare system is under that kind of strain, accessing routine care becomes more difficult for everyone.

That’s why a maternity care desert isn’t just a place on a map.

It’s a reflection of a healthcare system struggling to meet the needs of its community.

At LCRF Southwest, we believe understanding these challenges is the first step toward creating meaningful change. Because when we understand the “why,” we can have better conversations about the “how.”

đź’š Strong communities care for one another.

This is More Explaining, where we break down big issues into conversations everyone can understand.

What healthcare topic would you like us to connect the dots on next?
