For me, this feels like a Mandela Effect because it clashes with the mental map I've carried around since childhood.

Most classroom maps are based on projections that flatten a spherical Earth onto a rectangle, subtly distorting distances, angles, and positions. Over time, our brains simplify the image even further, imagining North and South America as two continents stacked neatly on top of each other.

In reality, the Americas form a giant diagonal. As North America extends westward, South America angles sharply eastward. On a globe, the shift is obvious: Brazil protrudes deep into the Atlantic, while the Great Lakes region sits farther west than most people realize.

You can drive from Lisbon, Portugal, to Singapore without crossing a single ocean.

The journey spans nearly 11,000 miles (18,000 km), crosses two continents, and passes through more than a dozen countries. Today it is one of the longest continuous overland routes on Earth.

For most of human history, a trip like this would have been impossible. Roads ended at borders, deserts, mountain ranges, and vast wilderness. Merchants traveling between Europe and Asia relied on the Silk Road, a network of caravan routes where goods changed hands countless times before reaching their destination.

The route passes through lands once traveled by Roman merchants, Silk Road traders, Mongol armies, and generations of explorers seeking a connection between East and West. Only modern highways, bridges, tunnels, and international border agreements made a continuous road journey possible.

Despite the modern infrastructure, the trip remains a challenge. Drivers must navigate visas, customs regulations, remote stretches of road, extreme weather, and thousands of miles of unfamiliar terrain. In some regions, the paperwork can be more difficult than the drive itself.

If you drove almost continuously with multiple drivers and minimal stops, the trip could theoretically be completed in around 8-10 days. In reality, border crossings, rest days, traffic, weather, road conditions, and visa requirements make a journey of 20-30 days more realistic.

Just joined but i’ve been enjoying people’s work. Tbh i found Ho**er, Oklahoma near the Kansas border with Google Maps. What i learned was back in the day Kansas was very conservative but Oklahoma was still the wild west with bars and brothels attended by folk from Kansas. Found it amusing Liberal, KS with Dorothy’s Wizard of Oz Museum. Finding Big Jerry’s Buds, the Dukes of Beaver County (plus review) on the OK side were a bonus. The slogan in Ho**er is “it’s a location not a vocation”

Who would have thought, after decades of disappearance, William Earl Moldt was finally found via Google Maps. He was found still in his car.
William Earl Moldt is known to have disappeared without a trace almost 22 years ago. The man who was 40 years old at the time did not return home after returning from a nightclub in 1997. Police tried to find him, but were unsuccessful.
Moldt's fate later became clear after his car was accidentally discovered by a property surveyor using Google Maps to look at satellite photos of residential areas in Wellington, Florida.

The strange "cold blob" refers to a persistent patch of ocean water southeast of Greenland that has resisted global warming and even cooled slightly over recent decades, while surrounding areas heat up.

This anomaly signals a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a vital system of currents often called the ocean conveyor belt.

The AMOC transports warm, salty water northward from the tropics, releasing heat that moderates Europe's climate before the water cools, sinks, and returns south.

As greenhouse gases drive melting of Greenland's ice sheet, massive pulses of freshwater dilute the North Atlantic's salinity. Less dense water sinks more slowly, slowing the entire circulation and reducing northward heat delivery. This creates the cold blob exactly where models predict cooling from a diminished AMOC.

Scientists estimate the AMOC has already slowed by about 15 percent since the mid-20th century. The blob serves as visible evidence of this shift. Researchers warn we approach a critical tipping point: beyond a threshold, the circulation could collapse abruptly, remaining weak for centuries.

Such a collapse would bring colder winters to northwest Europe, altered global rainfall patterns disrupting monsoons, accelerated sea-level rise along the U.S. East Coast, and broader climate instability.

While debate persists on exact timing, recent reanalyses strengthen concerns that the system nears irreversible change. Urgent emissions cuts could help avert the worst outcomes.
