We are excited to share this new blog post highlighting Piper Kerman’s podcast, From Where She Stands. This podcast is an extension of Kerman’s memoir, Orange is the New Black, and the TV show of the same name. https://bit.ly/2XfivrB

By Jenni Buchanan Fans of Orange Is the New Black will definitely enjoy listening to Piper Kerman’s companion podcast From Where She Stands , but even if you’ve never seen an episode of OITNB you still won’t want to miss this smart, compassionate podcast about “real women whose lives have be...

California is poised to approve reparations up to $25,000 to victims who were among the thousands of people — some as young as 13 — who decades ago were sterilized because state officials deemed them unfit to have children.

We've been busy taking our job workshops to Zoom and finding new ways to connect with people in a virtual world. Doing so much remotely means we have been able to expand our reach throughout the state, and we have formed some new partnerships in these COVID times. Check out our blog for the latest updates.

Since the pandemic took over our lives in the US in early 2020, we have seen widespread changes to how we live, work and interact with others. This also changed the way we interact with the currently and formerly incarcerated people that we serve. When the pandemic first started, it wasn’t clear h...

Virtual though it may be, this art exhibit featuring a broad spectrum of mediums from incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people from Palestine to the U.S., has the potential to touch, amaze, engage, inform and transform more people than prior to the COVID pandemic.

We often fall into the trap of thinking that forced sterilizations are a relic of the past, but this horrible practice has happened to incarcerated women during our lifetimes. Watch the documentary “Belly of the Beast” to understand the scope of this practice in California prisons and support this bill that would give reparations to women forced to undergo involuntary sterilizations.

California is facing its dark history of forced or involuntary sterilizations. A bill seeking reparations for survivors took an important step this week.

The COVID outbreak at the Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF) was bad. No one deserves to be treated this way in the middle of a pandemic, especially those who test positive for COVID. Incarceration is not an excuse to needlessly expose people to a dangerous virus. Please take a moment to read this article by Michele Scott who is currently incarcerated at CCWF. https://www.elle.com/culture/career-politics/a35766530/prison-pandemic-story-michele-scott/?fbclid=IwAR34dcl9_jYggjtkDvPhIGE5-zmgDAOzQQzH43Ny8I4ic8Lruq6eU4R62AU

We have people we correspond with inside, and we are currently at the mercy of JPay, which means delayed messages. In addition, prisoners or their loved ones currently have to pay for a tablet. This partnership with GTL should make it easier for everyone inside to correspond with those outside. Let’s hope they also remove the cost of sending messages, which can be a burden for families of incarcerated people.
