When you were little did your Mom or Dad ever say, "Were you raised in a barn?! Shut the door!" If they did, you probably rolled your eyes or talked some smack under your breath where they couldn't hear you. But now that you're an adult, I bet you shut the door when the AC or heater is on. You likely know that helping your HVAC system run less is the BIGGEST way to save on your electric bill. Guess Mom and Dad weren't so dumb afterall, huh?

If you have ideas that have helped you save money on your electric bill, send them to [email protected]. We'll share them with everyone so they can save money, too.

Air conditioning accounts for 50-60% of your monthly electric bill. Anything you can do to keep the sun off your windows or exterior walls, especially on the East and West sides, will help your air conditioner run less in the summer. Landscaping can go a long way to help you with this. Deciduous trees will shade your home in the summer and help warm them in the winter when their leaves fall. Just make sure you plant them away from power lines along the road.

If you still have incandescent bulbs anywhere in your home, here's one of the easiest upgrades you can make: switch to LED lighting. LEDs use up to 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last up to 25 times longer.

Start with the lights you use most — your kitchen, living room, and outdoor fixtures — and work from there. It's one of the simplest changes you can make with one of the fastest paybacks.
