Lafayette Parish 4-H

Lafayette Parish 4-H 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life Jean Church in the center. Louisiana is the only U.S.

The Lafayette Parish region of south Louisiana was settled by French-speaking Acadians in the mid 1700s. The British had driven them from Nova Scotia for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the English Crown. The Acadians were joined by another group of settlers called Creoles, descendants of African, West Indian and European pioneers. At the time of the migration, Louisiana was under Spanis

h rule, and authorities welcomed the new settlers. Lafayette began as Petit Manchac is the mid-1700s when the English and Indian traders flocked to the point where the Old Spanish Trail crossed the Vermilion River. In 1821, An Acadian refugee, Jean Mouton, formally designed Lafayette with St. The town grew around the church, and in 1824 individual parishes were formed. state divided into parishes instead of counties. The original division matched jurisdictions of the Roman Catholic Church. The community incorporated in 1836 as Vermillionville. Agriculture and cattle raising boosted the economy, and the community prospered until the region was nearly destroyed by yellow fever and the Civil War. In 1881, when the railroad was extended from New Orleans to Houston, the area again prospered. The town's name was changed to Lafayette in 1884. In 1940, oil companies began to establish offices in Lafayette because of its central location to oil activities. Today, Lafayette is a center of gulf oil and gas industry. Also, next week's session has been moved to TUESDAY, MAY 19, 2026, and the schedule below has been updated to reflect the new date!
Tonight's session will focus on Trail (Ranch & Open), so get ready to learn, ride, and have a great time in the arena!

Last night, Lafayette Parish 4‑H proudly celebrated our 2025–2026 Honor Program, and WOW — what an incredible group! 🎉
👏 Congratulations to each of our award recipients who have put in the hard work, raised the bar, and consistently shown leadership, responsibility, and strong character throughout their 4‑H journey.

To say we are proud of our very own Nicole Gerard and Maddox Miller is truly an understatement. We are thrilled to celebrate their well-deserved achievement of promotion and tenure with the LSU AgCenter—a milestone that reflects not only their dedication and hard work, but also their passion for serving others.
Nicole and Maddox represent the very best of what Extension stands for. Through their commitment, leadership, and heart for the community, they continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of youth, families, and citizens across Lafayette Parish. Their work goes far beyond daily responsibilities—they invest in people, build relationships, and strengthen programs that truly make a difference.
