Lights and sirens are not the only indicator of urgency. Calls can change very quickly as deputies receive new information from dispatchers or those on scene, What starts as an emergency response may quickly transition to a non-emergency response, or vice versa. Our goal is to arrive safely so we can best help you in your time of need.

Mrs. Stefanie Black, Black Black, all dressed in… Ok that could get pretty corny to start the morny 😂, but I must admit I do sing a few words from that song every now and then when I walk by Stefanie’s desk. We both laugh, or maybe I laugh, and she is just being polite 😂. Either way, we do have a good time here in the office, and Stefanie is part of the reason why we do.

For the past 15 years, Stefanie has been with us in a couple different roles, with each being extremely important. For many years, Stefanie was overseeing our commissary account before taking a new position in the county for a few months. Stefanie came back and for the last few years, she has been the primary point of contact for records requests. At one point in May, we received over 500 requests for records from the public alone this year which is a lot for one person to complete. To keep up, her teammates have pitched in to help out when they get a chance. For people to be willing to help out when they have the chance, says a great deal about Stefanie and the team when have here in the office.

Stefanie, thank you for choosing us 15 years ago. Thank you for the many years of contacting the State Board of Accounts for me when I had a question about a purchase from commissary, keeping a smile on your face when the record requests pile up, being sarcastic back, and the conversations about family. I know the things you see and hear when making copies of videos and reports can make it a very difficult job at times, but know that you are an extremely important part of this team, and we all appreciate the work that you do.

Please join us in congratulating and thanking Administrative Assistant Stefanie Black on 15 years of service to the citizens of Tippecanoe County and this office.

Have a great week everyone, enjoy the nice weather, and remember to…

Get along, talk nicely to each other, don’t take things that aren’t yours, and call us if you need us.

Good morning to you all. For many of you, today is a day off from work because it is a holiday. When I was younger, I didn’t really understand the true meaning of today. It was always a time to gather with family for a cookout, opening of the city pools, the day after the big race, and the last day of a three day weekend. All that is still true today, but stop and think for a minute why we get to do all of those type of things and so much more.

We live in the greatest country on the planet. Perfect, no, but the greatest. We have freedoms that many others don’t have, and it is because of our military servicemen and women that lost their life while serving. Today is the day that we remember and honor them.

Many events will take place around the country today to honor and mourn those that gave their life while serving. If you have time, stop by one of these events, listen to what is said, and look at the faces of those that served. We really do live in a special place.

Have a great day and week everyone.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Deputy Jon Samuelson, his family, and the men and women of the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Samuelson stopped to assist a stranded motorist near Michigan City, Indiana. The motorist requested Deputy Samuelson transport him the the Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City. After Samuelson dropped him off, he was alerted to the fact the suspect was implicated in a criminal event that had taken place a short time before Samuelson stopped to help him.

Samuelson went back into the hospital to try and locate the suspect. Samuelson was immediately fired upon by the suspect and was struck several times. Deputy Samuelson was flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital in Critical Condition.

Please keep the Deputy and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Happy middle of the week to you all. If you watched the short videos of our series The Difference Between a Sheriff’s Office and Police Department, you got to see a couple episodes that pertained to the jail. What is not mentioned in either video are the programs for the inmates. We could simply not offer anything to those that are incarcerated, but that doesn’t do anybody any good. If we can help make a positive change in one person’s life, we can hopefully never see them walk through the intake sliders again.

We have several programs in our facility with the newest being the Tippecanoe County Adult Reentry Reimagined Services (TCARRS) program. There is so much to this program, but I want to highlight a few things about the program. Our partnership with Paul’s Plan Ministries, TCARRS, and our community partners is so important to not only this facility, but to the community as a whole. Recovery and successful reentry begin before release, and the TCARRS Matrix Model does just that by providing Peer Recovery Coaches to our inmates to meet them where they are.

Unlike traditional clinical-only models, the peer-led approach creates an environment of mutual understanding and trust by incorporating facilitators who have personal lived experience with recovery and overcoming life challenges. This helps participants feel seen, understood, and supported while reinforcing the message that recovery is possible.

Over 18 weeks, participants meet in groups to discuss and learn about such things as Early Recovery Skills-scheduling, RoadMap for Recovery, Guilt and Shame, Boredom, Relapse Prevention, Illness, Managing Anger, Roadmap for a Life Plan, Getting a Job, and so much more. All this being lead by those that have been incarcerated and have found success.

Across the six groups, 64 individuals participated, with 15 graduates successfully completing the program during this initial cycle - an important milestone in launching recovery programming inside the jail.

In a correctional setting, participation in recovery programming often comes with challenges including transfers, releases, court movement, and varying stages of readiness for change. Every person who engages in programming is taking a step toward personal growth, and every graduate represents meaningful commitment and perseverance.

A few comments from the graduates were:

“I look forward to building on the work done in my time in MATRIX through the RWI and Trinity program after this”.

“MATRIX and the TCARRS staff have helped me identify the main 2 reasons I kept using drugs and it was trauma and pain”.

“Jake and the TCARRS staff have helped me understand why I keep doing the same things over and over, and how my criminal thinking keeps me stuck and I don’t want to live that way anymore. Thank you to the TCARRS staff”.

Below are a few pictures from the graduations that took place on Monday and Tuesday. Please join us in congratulating these individuals on an accomplishment they may never have achieved if it wasn’t for Paul’s Plan Ministries, TCARRS, and our community partners. Thank you to everyone involved and a special thank you to those that took a major step toward a better life.

Have a great reset of the week everyone
