šŸš§šŸ›  Notice: the Children’s Little Free Library is temporarily out of service 🪚🚧

I had noticed that the post on which the Library was mounted had become loose and the Library was starting to lean badly. I had planned to just put some Quikrete in the post hole to stabilize it, but thankfully my carpenter son came by to help. He lifted the entire structure up and out of the hole (šŸ’Ŗ!), and discovered that the 4x4 post had completely rotted underground. ! So,,, ļæ¼He’s taking it to his fix-it-up shop and soon our Children’s Little Free Library will be securely re-installed! Thank you, Kyle! 🄰

Help decide! I’m going to put a sign next to my Little Free Library alerting the neighborhood dog walkers of the dog treats canister always kept inside the Library. Schug Awards has created three possible designs, and they’re all so cute I can’t decide! ā€œLikeā€, ā€œā¤ļøā€, or comment below which one is your favorite!

After our Libraries were completely emptied overnight on two separate occasions recently, it had been suggested that I leave them empty for a while to discourage unwanted activity. ļæ¼But then a wise friend told me I can’t let the bad decisions of others change my intentions, and he was so right! So we are back in business, better and brighter than before! Both Libraries are filled with books and toys,ļæ¼ and lit up with decorations for the holiday season! ļæ¼

For the second time in as many months, some inconsiderate person emptied not only the original Little Free Library but the Children’s Library as well overnight. They even left the doors open in the rain so the Library interiors got wet. Sigh. It’s not technically a theft since the books are given away for free, but taking all the books at once is certainly not in keeping with the mission of Little Free Library.
No donations are needed at this time as I still have lots of books, but what a shame if one person ruins such a beloved and well-used neighborhood amenity. šŸ˜”

After someone felt the need to empty our Library of every single one of its books sometime this weekend, we are back in business! I have wonderfully generous friends and donations are comingļæ¼, but this is a good start with favorite authors like John Grisham, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown, Michael Crichton, Mary Kay Andrews, Fern Michaels, plus a few titles I threw in that looked good—SO good, in fact, I decided to read them first before I put them out in the Library (job hazard of a Library StewardšŸ˜‚!)
I’m also proud to include a signed copy of my sister’s just-published book, ā€œThreads: A Story of Resilience in Catawba County.ā€ ā¤ļøļæ¼
And although I’m certain the person who took— not stole, as they are free for the taking—all the books is not on my FB, here is a message to them just in case they see this public page:
ā€œFriend— Thank you for leaving the Children’s Library intact. I would imagine you took all the other books to sell them. Even though our Library was overflowing, I’m sure you probably got less than $10ļæ¼ for the entire lot as they are not of much monetary value. Next time, if you need money, I understand. Please leave me a note and I will leave you $20, no questions asked. And take a book to read. But mostly,, kindness... pass it onšŸ˜Šā€

New addition to the Little Free Library: free face masks. Please help yourself! Also thank you to Kelly McCormick Tutin for a generous donation of both adult fiction and a mountain of adorable baby board books! And lastly, toy alert: CVS has nice TY Lion King Simba and Nala characters reduced to $1.99! I stocked up and two went into the Children’s Little Free Library today. šŸ˜ŠšŸ¦šŸ“š

Any R.L. Stine readers out there? One of my loyal Little Free Library patrons is a big fan. She’s convalescing right now so if you have any you’d be willing to loan or donate, particularly his Goosebumps series, I know she’d be very appreciative. I’ll be happy to pick up and deliver them to her. Thanks in advance! ā¤ļøšŸ“šā¤ļø

It may be a dreary rainy day, but look what’s in our libraries! Thanks to generous donations, the Children’s Library is stocked with new books, including several brand-new STEM-oriented books—perfect for kids to explore while our schools are shut down. There are even some ā€œreading buddies ā€œ, just waiting to be taken home and read to.
And if you look closely, there are a few different type of items today: non-perishable food items. As we come together to face this pandemic as a community, let’s help our neighbors who may be struggling. It’s the Hoosier way! And certainly what my parents would have done. As Dad always said,

I’m always thrilled to see how well-used our Libraries are! I’ve just processed a huge donation of classics-to-current literature of every genre, and both Libraries are restocked and ready to go!
I’m especially touched at how quickly the Children’s Little Free Library cycles through books and toys— especially in a neighborhood with few young families. So thank you for all the children’s book donations and please keep them coming! And please watch for inexpensive toys this holiday season—alert me or consider a donation. Often you can nice stuffed animals for $5 or less. (Please new toys only, with tags still on, to assure parents of cleanliness)
Thank you all for continuing to make both Libraries a well- loved addition to Saw Mill Run and a gift to all who pass through.
ā€œKindness...Pass it on!ā€

Meet my new friend, Sue! Sue stopped by while I was getting my newspaper to tell me how grateful she is to have our Library to use! She’s a regular visitor and often sits on the bench to read a bit before making her way back to the nursing facility down the street. The Library is open to everyone, but it always makes me especially happy when folks with limited ability to get out can enjoy it. šŸ’•
Sue really loves true stories of any kind and word search puzzles. If you have any you’d like to donate, I’ll happily get them to her.
Thank you all for making these Libraries such a blessing to so many people. I never imagined six (seven?) years ago when I started just how much they’d be loved. šŸ“š
