As Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) transitions its garbage and recycling provider from Republic Services to Acadiana Waste Services (AWS), LCG is addressing some frequently asked questions.

๐—จ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—”๐—ช๐—ฆ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜€
As a reminder, AWS will not begin collecting waste until October 30. Residents should not use their new AWS carts until this date. Republic Services will not collect waste that is placed curbside in an AWS cart.

Some residents who currently have two garbage carts with Republic Services have questioned why they didnโ€™t receive two AWS carts, and some customers are wondering why they didnโ€™t receive a recycling cart. Per communications that began in January 2023, residents need to request a second garbage cart and recycling cart through AWS. The deadline to receive an additional garbage cart and a recycling cart in time for AWS's start date was May 31, 2023. This deadline was put in place to allow AWS sufficient time to plan and deliver carts before beginning collections on October 30.

Residents can still request a second garbage cart for a one-time rental fee of $90 and request a recycling cart at no charge; however, these requests will not be fulfilled by AWS's start date. To request a recycling or garbage cart, visit www.acadianawaste.com/recycling-service/ or call 337-205-7710.

There has also been some confusion regarding the ownership of a second Republic Services cart. Some customers believe they own these carts since they paid for them. However, the fee paid for the additional cart was a one-time rental fee for the duration of the contract. Republic Services still owns the carts, so they must be returned. AWS will not empty any Republic Services carts.

If a second cart is requested through AWS, the same conditions will apply.

For any further questions or assistance, please reach out to Acadiana Waste Services at the contact information provided above.

Iโ€™m supporting Thomas Hooks for City Council. I hope you will consider doing the same.

Thomas has all of the qualifications for the job. Iโ€™ve found Thomas to be intelligent, open-minded, and hard working. Heโ€™s got a finance and business background. He understands development from his time as Chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission. Heโ€™s been an effective leader in his professional and personal life, active in his church, coaching soccer, and supporting UL, where he is an alum.

And Thomas is running for all of the right reasons. Thomas and his wife, Sarah Delahoussaye Hooks, have five young children. As parents, they want Lafayette to be a safe and prosperous place, so that their children donโ€™t have to move away to find great job opportunities. As a parent and grandparent, I want the same. We all do.

He is ready to continue the progress weโ€™ve made to decrease flooding risk, improve our parks and recreational facilities, and right-size the city budget. Our consolidated form of government is one of the most complicated forms of government in the countryโ€”there is a big learning curve involved. But because of his experience and knowledge, Thomas will be ready to do the job from day one. Thomas will make a great councilman for District 4.

You can find out more at vote4hooks.com.

It has been an honor to serve the people of District 4 both on the City-Parish Council and the new Lafayette City Council. I am grateful for the support of the voters in this district for electing me twice for this job. I plan on continuing to work for the betterment of this community that I am so proud to call home. I am looking forward to having a little more time to spend with my children and my grandchildren. And, I hope there is more Pickleball in my future as well ๐Ÿ™‚

Lafayette City Councilmember Nanette Cook has announced she will not seek a third term in office.

With summer in full swing, more people are mowing their lawns and throwing grass clippings into the street. Clippings blown down drains or left to sit in the street impedes stormwater flow, can harm aquatic life, and is a danger to motorcyclists.

One lawnโ€™s clippings in the street may seem harmless, but grass accumulates, clogs pipes and potentially localizes flooding. Additionally, dry clippings blow up into a motorcyclistโ€™s face, and wet clippings are even more dangerous because they cause a slippery surface.

Aquatic life can also be negatively impacted when grass flows down drains and into nearby waterways like the Vermilion River. Leaves and lawn clippings are a source of nitrogen and phosphorous, which are nutrients that cause algae to grow. This in turn deprives the waterway, fish and other aquatic life of oxygen.

More pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year trying to escape the loud bangs and bright flashes of fireworks which are amplified for animals. Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center (LASCC) Supervisor Shelley Delahoussaye expects to see an increase of pets brought to the shelter and families calling the shelter hoping their pet is at the shelter after the July Fourth celebrations.

Delahoussaye advised that residents should prepare their home to keep pets safe on the Fourth of July and days ahead because people tend to set off fireworks before the official holiday.

โ€ข Bring the pet to any veterinary clinic to have it scanned for a microchip, a free service. If outside of regular hours of operations, take the animal to a 24/7 clinic.
โ€ข Foster the pet until LASCC reopens on July 5.

Pet owners in search of their pet should check the LASCC Lost Pet webpage at: https://www.lafayettela.gov/lascc/lost-found/lost-a-pet.

As a reminder, the setting off, possession, sell, or handle of any fireworks in the City of Lafayette is prohibited. Anyone caught violating the ordinance may be subject to criminal penalties.
