The recent rain is welcome! Sending fresh water from the Atchafalaya River to Bayou Teche and Vermilion River is our mission. Due to the lack of consistent rainfall, we have run our pumps for 85 days this year, compared to just 10 days during the first quarter of 2025.

Fresh water flows through Ruth Canal! As an important part of our ongoing maintenance plan, we recently removed trash and debris from Ruth Canal and continue to monitor and maintain structures to ensure they are functioning efficiently.

Yesterday was a fantastic day as we welcomed the Acadiana Master Naturalists to the Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District for a field tour. We explored several project structures and shared some insights about how everything operates and why it matters to our region.

One of the most exciting moments was spotting a stunning bald eagle soaring above us, along with a beautiful speckled kingsnake. A huge thank you to the Acadiana Master Naturalists for spending the day with us and for all the incredible work you do for conservation and education in our community.

2025 By the Numbers: A Year in Review

This year, our team conducted monthly sampling at 24 sites across the watershed, plus weekly monitoring at one site each on the Vermilion River and Bayou Teche. Altogether, we collected meter readings and water samples 328 times in 2025. Our daily tracking of water elevations, flows, and other key data from sites throughout the watershed guides our operations, ensuring we optimize pump and structure use to maintain the highest possible water quality.

To supplement flow during dry periods, we operated pumps for a total of 174 days. When a storm threat emerged in the Gulf, we acted quickly and successfully executed our storm preparation plan, helping the watershed and our community.

Throughout the year, we made important progress on infrastructure, updating, refurbishing, and replacing equipment as needed, which was funded by reserves dedicated to major repairs and replacements. We remain fully committed to meeting the longstanding agreements established with the federal government more than 45 years ago.

Thank you to all district residents for your ongoing support. Together, we will continue to safeguard our watershed’s infrastructure and enhance water quality for years to come.

Saltwater intrusion doesn’t just affect the coast. It moves inland, reaching our groundwater aquifers, the farms that support our communities, and the wildlife that make up our Sportsman’s Paradise.

Keeping water moving through the Teche-Vermilion system helps push saltwater back where it belongs to protect our crops, ecosystems, and local economy.

The Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District manages that flow year-round to prevent stagnation during low-flow periods so our communities can stay resilient.
