📚What do Catherine de Medici’s high heels have to do with Black postmasters of the 19th century? Join us as we welcome acclaimed librarian and local historian Dorothy Lazard to find out!

🌳Following the success of What You Don’t Know Will Make a Whole New World, her new memoir delights and inspires readers with powerful firsthand accounts of the Oakland Main Library and the diverse patrons whose lives are transformed there. Lazard spent years on the front lines facing challenges such as budget cuts and book bans, never losing faith in the Library as a place of both knowledge and refuge.

📚Publishers Weekly enthused, “Lazard delivers an ode to public service that brims wth communal feeling.” Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from the author herself!

🧠We know that social connection enriches our lives — so why do we hesitate to connect? In A Little More Social, acclaimed author and behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley explores why we need connection yet often behave unsocially.

🎞️ Advocating for small, but impactful acts, Epley demonstrates that bridging the gap between two people is easier, and often more successful, if we seize the small moments and choose to be a little more social. Epley’s research has been featured by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Wired, and NPR, among many others. Books are available for purchase with tickets and at the event courtesy of Orinda Books.

Join Friends of the Library for Sweet Thursday with author Vanessa Hua 📚

Set in the fictional Bay Area community of El Nido, Hua’s Coyoteland follows a Chinese American family whose arrival sets off a series of scandals as a coyote rampages through the hills of Berkeley. Urgent, riveting, and deeply heartfelt, Coyoteland unflinchingly explores our current moment.
