👀Ever wonder what's happening beneath the surface at Waneka Lake?

🛶The Open Space team got out on the water to deploy fish structures throughout the lake.

🐟These structures provide valuable habitat for fish and are just one of the many ways our team works behind the scenes to support and care for our natural spaces.

🛶Waneka Lake isn't just beautiful from the shoreline there's a whole ecosystem beneath the surface!

⛔ Due to low water levels, the Waneka Lake Boathouse has ended rental operations for the remainder of the season. We look forward to getting you back out on the water in summer 2027!

A fawn trying out its new legs at the beaver dam! Fawns weigh 6-8 lbs. at birth but gain 60-70 lbs. before the next winter. When they sense a predator, they hide in the grass, stay completely still and slow their breathing. If you see a fawn hiding, don't approach it. Let it be! This is their natural defense mechanism.

Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) may not have flashy blooms, but this native prairie grass earns its place with year-round beauty and exceptional wildlife value. Its blue-green summer foliage transforms into glowing copper and burgundy each fall, topped with silky, silver seed heads, which feed small birds throughout the winter. This hardy native grass is a host plant for many butterflies, like the Leonard's Skipper, and provides overwintering habitat for many beneficial pollinators.

Who let the bugs out? We let the bugs out. We just released 6,000 Apthona flea beetles that feed on a noxious w**d called Leafy Spurge at Rothman today. Biocontrol is a way to use nature to fight noxious w**ds. Thanks bugs!
