On 04APR2024, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Army ROTC program transported five contracted Cadets and one Cadre/Instructor from University property to Camp Shelby, MS, utilizing tactical helicopter support provided by the Louisiana Army National Guard. Prior to the flight, the Cadets were instructed on proper air mobility/assault planning, selection and marking of the pickup zone, placement of travelers in proper pickup zone posture, and post-flight actions departing the aircraft at the land zone. Once dropped off at the helicopter landing zone at Camp Shelby, MS, the Cadets participated in a four-day field training exercise where they trained on land navigation procedures, individual warrior skills, and conducted platoon level situational training exercises. This annual spring field training exercise involved over ten university ROTC programs across Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and was the culminating training event for Military Science Level 3 Cadets as they prepare to attend Advanced Camp during Cadet Summer Training this summer at Fort Knox, KY.
Special thanks goes out to the Louisiana Army National Guard Aviation community for providing the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter for the transportation, and to the leadership of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for permission to use land north of the Cajundome for our helicopter pickup zone (Department of Transportation, Facility Management, College of Sciences, University Police, Provost & VP for Academic Affairs, and our University President).
