🍩 D 🍩 N U T S!? SAY IT AIN’T SO! 😂

Huge THANK YOU to Goody Good Donutsfor treating the BCSO crew to TWO boxes of sugar-free, fat-free, totally-healthy-and-definitely-not-just-an-excuse-to-eat-donuts donuts! 🤣🍩

Our staff can’t thank you enough for the incredibly kind gesture! ❤️

Sgt. John is already showing our intern the proper law-enforcement technique for handling a donut… secure it, inspect it, and immediately place it into evidence. 👮‍♂️🍩😂

No donuts were harmed in the making of this post. We can’t promise they survive the shift. 😉

🥁 Drum roll please! …. See below for the answer of Tuesday Trivia with BCSO:

Question:
How far back does the history of Sheriffs in New Hampshire go?

The position of Sheriff in New Hampshire dates back to which century?

A. 1600s
B. 1700s
C. 1800s
D. 1900s

ANSWER: A — The 1600s! 🎉

And here’s the historical proof — because we know someone is going to ask! 😉📚

One of New Hampshire’s earliest historical records documenting a sheriff dates to the 1680s, during New Hampshire’s colonial/provincial period.

In Jeremy Belknap’s The History of New-Hampshire, first published in 1784, Belknap reproduced an actual warrant from the period identifying James Sherlock as “provost marshal and sheriff” of the Province of New-Hampshire. The warrant is dated February 1683/84 and was issued under Governor Edward Cranfield’s authority.

Belknap’s historical account also states that in 1680, when the new provincial government was established, the judicial courts were organized with James Sherlock serving as provost marshal and sheriff, with “under sheriffs” also serving.

📜 That’s pretty strong evidence that the office of Sheriff existed in New Hampshire during the 17th century — nearly 100 years before New Hampshire became a state in 1788.

And this isn’t based on a random internet fact!

The New Hampshire Secretary of State’s Division of Archives and Records Management maintains the state’s historical records. Its archival holdings include:

• New Hampshire State and Provincial Papers dating back to 1623
• General Court records beginning in 1680
• Provincial court records dating to approximately 1650
• Petitions dating to 1679/1680
• New Hampshire’s published Provincial and State Papers

So when we say the history of the Sheriff’s office in New Hampshire reaches back to the 17th century, there are actual historical records behind that answer.

🔎 Fact-check!

📚 New Hampshire State and Provincial Papers
The Secretary of State’s Archives notes that this 40-volume collection contains New Hampshire’s historical records dating back to the 17th century.

History matters — and sometimes the receipts are almost 350 years old! 🏛️📜

Edit: Just a little clarification for those who were concerned about the pup’s position in the photo—she was not leashed to the cage or kennel. ❤️

This sweet old gal is almost blind and deaf, and she was also very weak because she hadn’t received her diabetes medication. She was absolutely loved and cared for while she waited for her owners to arrive. 🐾

We truly appreciate everyone’s concern and kindness toward her! She was just an old, tired gal having a rough day. 😊

Thanks for looking out for her, and we hope everyone has an excellent day! 🐶
