This week’s message is related to Housewise tabletop fire pits that use alcohol as a fuel. Several years ago we had a resident that was severely burned due to flame jetting from a similar device. Uncontrolled alcohol pool fires and flame jetting are two very serious hazards related to these devices. Please refer to the Product Safety Warning Details section in the CPSC’s webpage for more information on the hazards associated with them.

Laconia Fire Department and the CPSC urge citizens to immediately stop using these devices and dispose of them.

CPSC Warns Consumers to Stop Using Houswise Tabletop Fire Pits Immediately Due to Risk of Serious Burn Injury or Death from Flame Jetting and Fire Hazards.

CPSC is aware of more than two dozen reports of flame-jetting, fuel leaking outside of the fire pit, and unexpectedly high flames, resulting in seven injuries, including third-degree burns.

SPECIAL MID-WEEK RISK REDUCTION MESSAGE

If you are going to use fire works this holiday season, please take a minute to read a few safety tips:

- The best option is to enjoy one of the professional fireworks displays.
- If you are going to purchase fireworks, buy them from a state licensed retail location, follow all safety precautions, and our City ordinances.
- Sparklers can reach over 1,200 degrees. Please light one at a time, keep them at an arm’s length away, stand 6 feet from other people, and have water nearby.

This week we are reposting our message about storing combustible materials on cooktops. We had another fire caused by combustible materials being stored on cooktops. This would make the 4th fire this year caused by accidentally bumping a burner k**b causing it to turn on and ignite the combustible materials on top of the stove. While cooktop burner k**bs are designed to reduce the occurrence of accidental activation of the burner, it can still happen if they are bumped or knocked into.

Please make sure that any cooktop is clear of combustible materials at all times to help keep your family and neighbors safe!

NEWS RELEASE: INVESTIGATION OF FIRE AT FORMER LACONIA STATE SCHOOL CONTINUES

LACONIA, N.H. – New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey, Laconia Fire Department Chief Timothy Joubert, and Laconia Police Department Chief Matthew Canfield announce that a joint investigation is continuing after a fire at the former Laconia State School.

Around 3 a.m. Sunday, June 14, 2026, members of the Laconia Fire Department responded to Right Way Path for a reported fire on the property.

When firefighters arrived, they found a multistory building actively on fire and requested additional resources to contain the fire. Firefighters from multiple surrounding communities responded and ultimately knocked down the fire.

The building, which had been vacant before the fire, suffered severe damage. Heavy machinery was brought to the site and demolished the remaining parts of the building.

No injuries were reported.

The property is owned by the State of New Hampshire. Accordingly, investigators with the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and have assumed lead of the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire, with the assistance of the Laconia Police Department. In the days since the fire, investigators have been collecting and reviewing evidence and conducting interviews.

All aspects of the fire remain under investigation. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office at 603-223-4289 or [email protected]. Tips can also be reported anonymously to the Arson Hotline at 800-400-3526.
