Child Advocacy Center of Belknap County

Child Advocacy Center of Belknap County The GLCAC is dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and their families.

The Greater Lakes Child Advocacy Center (GLCAC) was founded in 2005, as the culmination of a two-year collaborative effort between DCYF, law enforcement, prosecutors, victim advocates, mental health professionals, medical professionals and other committed community members in Belknap County. The Greater Lakes Child Advocacy Center seeks to effectively intervene on multiple levels to help end sexua

l and physical violence against children in our community:
•We seek to reduce the trauma to children by avoiding multiple interviews of children, and by providing a neutral, physically and psychologically safe place for children to report abuse.
•We seek to support non-offending parents and families by providing on-site crisis intervention and support and by linking families with needed services.
•We seek to improve investigations of child abuse cases through multi-disciplinary teamwork.
•We seek to hold more offenders accountable with forensically sound interviews and effective, timely investigations, that will lead to increased confessions, prosecutions, and convictions.
•We seek to improve the system’s response to child abuse by providing on-going in-service trainings for local professionals.
•We seek to promote growth of public awareness of child abuse (recognition, reporting and prevention), and to promote growth of community resources for effective responses to child abuse through our Community Outreach Campaign.

Working in direct service, whether at a CAC or in another role, requires compassion, patience, dedication, and resilience. When your work requires that level of effort, it can be easy to forget to take time for yourself.

But self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s necessary. And it doesn’t have to be time-consuming to make a difference.

Quick At-Work Tip: Set an alarm if you need to and take several short, 2–5 minute breaks throughout the day to stretch, breathe deeply, or walk away from your desk to reset your nervous system.

What's your best self-care tip?

Healing looks different for everyone, and there is no set timeline.

But when support is available early, children are better able to process, cope, and move forward.

That’s the power of timely care and co-located services. 💚

Trauma-informed care isn’t just what we do—it’s how we do it.

It means creating spaces where children feel safe, supported, and in control so they can process and begin to heal.

How It Started vs. How It's Going...
The GSCA Behavioral Health program started in 2020 with one clinician.

At this time in 2023, there were two: Andrew and Abby 🙂

Three years later, they co-manage GSCA's behavioral health program, now a team of six and growing. We are so proud to offer these services, and even prouder of the team that provides them.

Happy National Mental Health Provider Appreciation Day—we appreciate each and every one of you, and the phenomenal work you do. 💚

Trauma-informed care is essential to helping children and their caregivers begin processing and healing. 💚

GSCA clinicians are trained in two evidence-based treatment modalities: Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI). These services are offered on-site at the CAC, at no cost.
