GRAYLING, Mich. – In the forest near Camp Grayling, Michigan, the rumble from a Humvee’s diesel engine slices through the darkness as it creeps down a dirt road, snapping tree branches under its tires.

Just off the road, hidden in the thick brush, a joint team of U.S. Army Green Berets and Air National Guard security forces Airmen sits motionless. No radio noise or words can be heard as the team waits for its target to breach an ambush site. In an instant, the silence is shattered by gunfire from the tree line, bringing the Humvee to a stop.

The tactical ambush was just one scenario for nearly 200 Air National Guard and a handful of Air Force Reserve security forces Airmen who descended upon northern Michigan for Exercise Sage Eagle 26-4, Aug. 3-14.

Col Damian Schlussel, Director of the Security Forces, spoke to graduates of the Basic Officer Course after participating in their graduation ruck on August 19th. The graduation marked the first time Airmen from the Royal Canadian Air Force had completed the course and also included Airmen representing Slovakia, Kuwait, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Twenty-two Air Guard security forces Airmen from the 107th Attack Wing conducted land navigation and active shooter training in Alaska from July 13 to 19.

The training exposed the airmen to an environment different from their home station at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. The terrain around Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, just outside Anchorage, includes dense brush, taller trees than those in western New York, hills that limited visibility and consistently changing weather conditions.

The room clearing training exercise presented a different challenge: an unfamiliar facility layout. The scenarios included armed and unarmed role players and civilians, requiring the airmen to apply the appropriate rules for each situation.

"The two-week, 50-hour simulator course equipped students with the skills to deploy FPV drones in realistic combat scenarios. Training focused on precise flight control, tactical reconnaissance and navigating complex terrain. Ultimately, students learned to integrate these unmanned systems into operations, emulating adversary tactics to better prepare friendly forces for the modern battlefield.

'The introduction of FPV drones as a training asset allows us to show our force just how fast, maneuverable, and effective these assets can be,' said Staff Sgt. Connor Montgomery, 824th Base Defense Squadron force production analyst. 'Possessing the capability to provide realistic training to our force is a vital capability that we must capitalize on.'"

"In the morning, a U.S. Air Force C-130J completes a combat landing to deliver key cargo to the mission. As the ramp begins to open, shots are heard in the distance, mortars begin landing within a few meters. The first thought is, “This is why we train,” and the Airmen of the Fly Away Security Team, or FAST, from the 726th Expeditionary Mission Support Squadron go into action."
