On March 7th, 1942 the first Tuskegee Airmen graduation ceremony was held. Benjamin Davis Jr., Charles DeBow Jr., George Roberts, and Lemuel Custis graduated from Advanced Flying School out of an original class of 13 students. Today we honor their achievements, as we are grateful for their service to our country! The history of the Tuskegee Airmen is taught to all incoming Airmen and Guardians at the 37th TRW, and the Airmen Heritage Museum on Lackland AFB showcases their famed story!

On the 28th of April, 1980, the 39th President of the United States visited Kelly AFB in San Antonio Tx. President Carter also served his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during WWII, a Georgia State Senator, Georgia Governor, and continued serving humanity long after he left the Oval Office. The 37th TRW History Office wishes President Carter fair winds and following seas, dear soul.

On November 18, 1966, Major William Knight flew the newly modded X-15 to Mach 6.33, or 4,261 MPH!

On this day October 11th, 1961, President John F. Kennedy authorized a detachment from the 4400th Combat Crew Training Squadron, later part of the 1st Air Commando Group, with 151 officers and enlisted men and eight T-28, four SC-47, and four RB-26 aircraft to deploy to South Vietnam as Project Farm Gate. The unit arrived in Vietnam on 14 November and flew its first T-28 strike mission from Bien Hoa on 26 December. The Farm Gate aircraft carried Vietnamese Air Force markings. The aircraft were used until 1 April 1964.

HELP NEEDED!!!

The Lackland Hero’s Walk is tribute to the Airmen who have been awarded the Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross, and Silver Star. The names of the Airmen are engraved on the pavers our current Airmen and Guardians walk across as they graduate Air Force and Space Force BMT.

Unfortunately the historical list of Air Force Silver Star recipients is not complete. We are seeking assistance from the community, to help identify the Air Force Airmen who are not listed on the site below.

It is our duty to keep these Hero’s legacies alive forever. If you know a US Airman who received a Silver Star who is not listed on the site below, please message us so that we can add them to the remembrance.

On July 23, 1995, AW C-5’s from the 433rd Airlift Wing flew pallets of medical supplies, food, blankets, clothes, furniture, and a military ambulance into Belarus to ease the economic suffering in the region.
