Some of the most valuable economic development work we do starts with a simple question: How is business?

Through our Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) efforts, LCEDC is regularly meeting with employers throughout LaGrange County to listen, learn, and better understand what they need to be successful—not just today, but five, ten, or twenty years from now.

Those conversations help us identify challenges with workforce, infrastructure, housing, training, expansion, regulations, and more. Sometimes we can connect a business directly with a resource or partner. Other times, hearing the same concern from multiple employers helps us recognize a larger issue that needs attention and advocate for change.

BR&E is about building relationships before there's a problem and making sure our existing businesses know they have someone in their corner.

Our local businesses are the foundation of LaGrange County's economy, and their long-term success matters to all of us.

Art & Economic Development: More Connected Than You Might Think

What does art have to do with economic development? Quite a bit!

Economic development isn't only about jobs and businesses. It's also about creating communities where people want to live, visit, invest, and put down roots—and art plays an important role in making that happen.

Public art, murals, performances, creative spaces, and community events add character to our towns and help create a sense of place. They give residents something to be proud of, attract visitors, support local businesses, and contribute to the quality of life that helps communities attract and retain talent.

For LaGrange County, investing in quality of place is part of investing in our economic future. Businesses need great communities to call home, and employees want to live somewhere they feel connected to.

Art helps tell the story of who we are—and creating places people love is an important part of building a strong economy.

Community development IS economic development.

This Labor Day, we're celebrating the people who keep LaGrange County moving.

From manufacturing floors and small businesses to farms, schools, healthcare facilities, construction sites, offices, and everywhere in between—our local workforce is at the heart of our economy and our communities.

Why Utilities Matter to Economic Development

When we talk about what businesses need to start, grow, or expand, utilities might not be the first thing that comes to mind—but reliable infrastructure is absolutely essential to a strong local economy.

Here in LaGrange County, we're fortunate to have utility partners helping serve residents and businesses throughout our communities. LaGrange County REMC provides incredibly reliable electric service across much of our county, while NIPSCO provides natural gas and electric service in other areas. The LaGrange County Regional Utility District also plays an important role in providing water and wastewater infrastructure, particularly around our lake communities.

Why does it matter? Because businesses need to know they can turn on the lights, power equipment, access the utilities necessary for production, and have the capacity to grow. Utility availability can even determine whether a site is viable for a new development or business expansion.

Strong utilities support strong businesses—and strong businesses support a strong LaGrange County economy.

We're grateful for the providers and partners who continue investing in the infrastructure that keeps our county running and helps prepare us for future growth, and look forward to continued expansion and improvements!

Innovation isn't just for big cities.

In rural communities like LaGrange County, innovation means creating new opportunities, solving challenges differently, and giving people the resources they need to turn good ideas into something more.

That's a big part of the vision behind the LaGrange County Innovation Center.

One piece of LCIC we're especially excited about is The Hub—a space intentionally designed for entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, and remote workers. With coworking space, furnished rental offices, meeting and classroom space, a podcast studio, and future training and programming, The Hub will give people a place to start, connect, learn, and grow without leaving LaGrange County to find those resources.

Why does that matter? Because when we give great ideas room to grow here, we have a better chance of keeping the businesses, talent, and opportunities they create here, too.

Rural communities are full of innovators. Sometimes they just need the right space, resources, and connections to help an idea take its next step.

LCIC Update: The Hub is getting closer!

Drywall work is officially complete, paint is going on the walls, and we've heard a rumor that ceilings are being installed this week...but we'll save more of that progress for another update!

Today, we want to talk about one piece of The Hub we're especially excited about: affordable office space for startups and small businesses.

Beginning November 1, 2026, The Hub will have four furnished private offices available for rent. Each office will include:

A desk and chair
A secure, lockable door
A window
Access to meeting rooms and shared spaces

Just bring your technology, settle in, and get to work!

These offices were designed to give entrepreneurs and small businesses a professional place to start, grow, meet with clients, and become part of the community we're building at The Hub.

We're excited to continue our Board Member Spotlight Series by highlighting board member, Traci Blaize.

As Superintendent of Lakeland School Corporation, Traci has dedicated her career to serving students, supporting educators, and preparing the next generation for success. Her leadership and commitment to education make her a valuable member of the LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors, where she helps strengthen the connection between education and workforce development.

A lifelong member of the LaGrange County community, Traci moved to LaGrange before starting kindergarten and has proudly called it home ever since. She met her husband, Christopher, in the halls of Lakeland High School, where he now works in the Maintenance Department. Together, they've built their lives in the community they love.

Outside of work, Traci enjoys golfing, sewing, and honing her skills as an expert level pool floater. And if you happen to see a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle decked out in Lakeland colors, you'll know just how much she loves her school community!

We're grateful for Traci's leadership, her passion for education, and her commitment to helping LaGrange County thrive. Thank you, Traci, for your service to LCEDC and our community!
