Akutnom de Jieng means the organization of Jieng. It is a qualified 501(C)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in 2008 by a group of South Sudanese in the USA. This organization is dedicated to charitable, religious, educational, and scientific purposes. The Jieng People: A Brief Overview:

The Jieng people, also known as the Dinka, are one of the largest ethnic groups in South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011. The Jieng people have a rich cultural heritage centered around cattle herding, with cattle symbolizing wealth and status. They primarily speak the Jieng language and follow traditional beliefs, with a growing presence of Christianity. Migration to the United States and Formation of Akutnom de Jieng, Inc.:

Many Jieng individuals and families sought refuge and opportunities abroad due to the Sudanese civil war. The United States became a destination for Jieng refugees and immigrants looking to escape the conflict. In 2008, a group of South Sudanese immigrants formed Akutnom de Jieng, Inc., with a mission to promote language inclusivity, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment within the Jieng-speaking community in the USA. They aspired to bridge linguistic gaps, celebrate diversity, and empower individuals to achieve their dreams. The Akutnom de Jieng, Inc. Community Center will offer a diverse array of services and activities to the Jieng-speaking community, including:

1. Tutoring: We will provide academic support to Jieng-speaking individuals of all ages, helping them excel in their educational pursuits and achieve educational excellence. This includes specialized tutoring to assist Jieng-speaking students whose parents are not proficient in English, bridging any language gaps that may hinder their academic progress.

In the face of diaspora dislocation and language erosion, we have sought to illuminate pathways for Jieng speakers, enabling them to thrive academically, socially, and economically while preserving the rich legacy of our people.
