La Verne residents should have recently received a mailer from Waste Management with information about an upcoming billing update for residential solid waste services.

Beginning September 1, 2026, residential solid waste billing will transition from the City of La Verne to Waste Management. Please note: there are no changes to your trash, recycling, or organics service as part of this transition. The only change is who will provide the billing.

In the coming months, residents will receive additional information from WM about account setup, payment options, and customer service contacts. The City and WM will also be holding workshops and providing technical assistance at La Verne City Hall to help residents with the transition. This update is intended to create a smoother process for residents by allowing customers to work directly with WM for billing and account-related questions.

Please continue to review future mailers and City updates as we get closer to the September 1 transition date. In the meantime, learn more at LaVerneCA.gov/WM.

When there’s a medical emergency, La Verne’s paramedic and ambulance services are ready to respond.

Measure GG was approved by La Verne voters in 1980 and implemented in 1981 to create a dedicated funding source for paramedic services in the City. Today, Measure GG helps fund these services through a monthly resident assessment, currently at $6.90.

The Fire Department may also bill insurance providers for ambulance transport and emergency medical services as part of cost recovery. However, residents are protected from direct out-of-pocket expenses associated with the resident billing program.

Over the past several decades, the cost of providing modern emergency medical services has continued to increase, including costs related to personnel, ambulances, medical equipment, supplies, training, certification requirements, and overall emergency response operations. While Measure GG and EMS billing help support the program, they have not kept pace with the full cost of providing paramedic and ambulance transport services.

The City Council is now considering whether to move forward with a potential ballot measure to modify Measure GG to better support the long-term sustainability of these services, maintain local paramedic and ambulance transport operations, and reduce ongoing impacts to the General Fund.

Residents are encouraged to attend the upcoming City Council meeting to learn more, ask questions, and provide feedback. Learn more at laverneca.gov/gg.

That’s a wrap on the June 1 City Council Meeting!

The Council recognized Lauren Foerch for her outstanding service to the Youth and Family Action Committee over the past three years. As a graduating senior at Bonita High School, Lauren has been a valued voice for La Verne’s youth and made history as the first voting student representative on the YFAC Executive Board following the City’s recent commission reorganization. Congratulations, Lauren! 👏

The City Council proclaimed June as Pride Month, celebrating LGBTQ+ people and recognizing the importance of building a welcoming and inclusive community for all. The proclamation was received by the Cultural Awareness and Social Inclusion Committee.

The Council also recognized the Route 66 Centennial, celebrating 100 years of one of America’s most iconic historic corridors. The California Historic Route 66 Association received the proclamation in recognition of its continued efforts to preserve, promote, and improve Route 66 throughout California. 🚗

We were pleased to have Civil Air Patrol Squadron 64 lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

In Northern La Verne, crews are actively working to clear more than 200 acres of City-owned land in areas identified as having the highest wildfire risk.

Throughout the month of June, members of the Public Works and Fire Departments will continue inspecting these areas to ensure compliance with defensible space requirements while also protecting sensitive natural resources, including native oak trees and other protected shrubs.

This important wildfire risk reduction work is supported in part by grant funding from the California Fire Foundation through its Disaster Relief and Recovery Grant Program.

As fire season approaches, residents are also encouraged to review their own properties and maintain defensible space to help reduce wildfire risk communitywide.

To learn more, please contact the La Verne Fire Department at 909-596-5991.

Did you know – in the hills of Northern La Verne off of Esperanza Drive is Live Oak Reservoir!

Live Oak Reservoir is owned and operated by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California as part of the regional water system. At approximately 77 acres, 3,000 feet long, and 105 feet high, it’s kind of a big deal! The water stored at the Reservoir is sent to MWD’s F.E. Weymouth Water Treatment Plant, also located in La Verne.

While the reservoir is located in our community, it is not connected to the City’s drinking water or fire hydrant system. La Verne’s water and firefighting supply comes from the City’s own system of reservoirs, tanks, wells, and water infrastructure located throughout the community.

At times, the reservoir may be lower or empty because of routine maintenance, preventative maintenance, system operations, or because the reservoir is not needed for regional water storage at that time.

Visit laverneca.gov/liveoak to learn more.

As part of La Verne’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, we’ll be sharing highlights from our local history and the places that helped shape the community we know today.

Now we highlight the John A. Larimer House, once the only home on Bradford Street in 1908, occupied by John A. Larimer and his wife, Susie. John came to Lordsburg from Tennessee in 1891, later managing the Richards Grove, once reported to be one of the largest groves in the state and today partly known as Twin Oaks Mobile Home Park. The Larimer family lived in the home until John’s sudden passing in 1925, after which Susie moved to Third Street in La Verne. Though no longer surrounded by isolated groves, the historic home remains a meaningful connection to La Verne’s early agricultural roots and has been carefully restored by current homeowners John and Sherry Best, who have preserved many of its original features while tackling the surprises that come with restoring an older home.

Join the La Verne Historical Society for a tour of this historic home during its annual vintage sale on May 30 and 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This historical information was provided by the La Verne Historical Society. Keep an eye out for future monthly posts highlighting more of La Verne’s history throughout the year.
