City of La Salle Police Department begins Fourth of July traffic safety campaign

(La Salle, Illinois) – The City of La Salle Police Department announced plans for July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The safety campaign will run from June 19 through July 6 to encompass three summer weekends leading up to and after Independence Day.

“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” said Sgt. Ray Gatza. “It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use cannabis or other impairing substances. Our officers will be working diligently to keep impaired drivers off the road and ensure everyone is buckled up.”

The City of La Salle Police Department will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments for the statewide effort.

To celebrate safely, designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family members drive impaired. Other important tips include:
• Give your designated driver your keys before you go out.
• If you are impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or any other drug, call a taxi, call a sober friend, or family member to get you home safely.
• Promptly report impaired drivers to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911.
• Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. Not only is it the law, but it’s also your best defense against an impaired driver.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns are made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The enforcement efforts are complemented by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign, which emphasizes the serious consequences of impaired driving and other unsafe driving behaviors.

Today, we are incredibly grateful and humbled to accept a generous donation of $5,274 from The Wave for Charities in support of the La Salle Police Department’s Officer Santa Program.

This remarkable contribution is the result of countless hours of planning, fundraising, and community support through the 6th Annual Jeep Poker Run. Because of the dedication of The Wave for Charities, the participants, sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who contributed, local children and families will experience the joy and magic of the holiday season through Officer Santa.

The Officer Santa Program is more than gifts under a tree. It is about bringing hope, creating lasting memories, and reminding families that their community cares. Every dollar donated helps ensure that children in our community have a brighter holiday season.

On behalf of the La Salle Police Department and the families we serve, we extend our sincere appreciation to The Wave for Charities for their continued partnership and generosity. Your commitment to giving back demonstrates the incredible impact that can be achieved when a community comes together for a common purpose.

Together, we are making a difference. One child, one family, and one act of kindness at a time.

Thank you, The Wave for Charities, for helping us keep the spirit of Officer Santa alive in La Salle! 🎅

The La Salle Police Department was proud to volunteer and serve lunch today during the annual Fishing Rodeo at the I & M Canal. Hosted by the Better Fishing Association, this outstanding community event brought together hundreds of kids and families for a day filled with fishing, fun, and lasting memories.

A huge thank you to the Better Fishing Association and all of the volunteers who dedicate their time to making this tradition possible year after year. Events like these strengthen our community and give our officers the opportunity to connect with the next generation outside of the badge.

We appreciate everyone who came out and hope all the young anglers had a fantastic day on the water. We’re already looking forward to next year! 🎣👮‍♂️💙

Zero excuses: ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign underway for Memorial Day

La Salle, IL — The City of La Salle Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Illinois for the 2026 “Click It or Ticket” campaign running May 15-26 during the Memorial Day travel period.

“Buckle up every trip, every time,” said Sgt. Ray Gatza. “Seat belts save lives, and we are committed to keeping our roads safe.”
Officers will conduct high-visibility enforcement day and night, focusing on seat belt violations. Motorists who fail to buckle up can expect to be stopped and ticketed.

Illinois law requires all drivers and passengers to wear seat belts. While usage has increased to 93% in 2025, unrestrained fatalities remain a concern — especially at night.

The “Click It or Ticket” initiative is funded with federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. For more information on safe driving practices, visit ItsNotaGameIllinois.com.
