Please consider helping one of our brother Firemen and his family who lost everything they own in a fire yesterday.

Huntingtown VFD has been added as an additional drop-off point.

The link for monetary donations is in the post below. Every little bit helps.

A member of our local fire service family is in need of our support. An Assistant Chief and Past Fire Chief of the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department recently lost everything in a devastating house fire in Huntingtown.

The fire service has always been built on neighbors helping neighbors, and we are asking our community and fellow first responders to come together during this difficult time.

Tonight, 4 members of our Department, alongside members of the Charles County Volunteer Rescue Squad and employees from Charles County Department of Emergency Services, were recognized by Mr. Billy Maddox for a CPR life save that occurred back in August 2025.

Crews responded to Mr. Maddox’s residence for a medical emergency and arrived to find him in cardiac arrest. Through the quick actions, teamwork, and dedication of everyone involved, crews worked tirelessly for several minutes to revive him — and were successful.

Surviving a cardiac arrest with a positive outcome is rare, making this reunion even more meaningful. Today, Mr. Maddox had the opportunity to personally meet and thank the crews who played a role in saving his life.

We are extremely proud of each and every member involved in this incident and grateful for the partnership between our public safety agencies that helps make outcomes like this possible.

Congratulations to all involved on a job well done, and we continue to wish Mr. Maddox good health and happiness.

🚨 PUBLIC SAFETY CAN’T AFFORD DELAYS 🚨

The La Plata Volunteer Fire Department is speaking out regarding the Maryland State Highway Administration’s proposed Route 6 (Charles Street) redesign project.

For months, we have raised serious concerns about how the current design could negatively impact emergency response operations within our community. Narrower lanes, raised medians, and reduced access points may delay fire trucks and ambulances from getting where they are needed most — when seconds matter.

Since meeting with elected officials on April 23, 2026, and formally presenting our operational concerns, we have not received any meaningful response or indication that these public safety issues are being addressed.

This is not about politics.
This is about response times.
This is about access.
This is about protecting our community.

Every day, our members respond to emergencies throughout the Town of La Plata and surrounding areas. Our apparatus require safe, reliable access to homes, businesses, and neighborhoods to effectively protect lives and property.

Because of the lack of communication and progress surrounding these concerns, the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department will begin a public awareness campaign to ensure our community understands the potential impact this project may have on emergency services.

We are asking for your support. Contact the Town Mayor or Councilmembers.

✅ Public safety must remain the priority
✅ Emergency vehicle access cannot be compromised
✅ Our community deserves a roadway design that works for everyone — including first responders

🚨 STAY INFORMED. GET INVOLVED. 🚨

Follow the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department page for:
• Project updates
• Public safety information
• Ways to support safe emergency access in our community

We remain willing to work collaboratively with all parties involved and continue to hope for meaningful engagement and resolution.

Together, we can protect our community and ensure that public safety always comes first.

At 0417 hours this morning, Truck 1 and Chief 1A responded to the 5700 block of Yellowfish Court in the Westlake neighborhood for a reported house fire.

Units arrived to find crews operating with fire in an attached garage with minimal extension into the first floor of the residence. Our volunteers assisted with fireground operations and searches of the home. During the search efforts, our crew successfully removed a cat from the first floor and a dog from the second floor.

The truck retuned to La Plata around 0600 hours, just in time to make it to work.

We would like to recognize two members for successfully completing the Charles County Fire & EMS High School Cadet Program.

Fireman Antoine Hampton completed his Maryland EMT certification and Firefighter II certification, further enhancing his ability to serve our community through both emergency medical care and fire suppression operations.

Probationary Fireman Grady Hutchins completed Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Engine Company Operations, building a strong foundation for a future in the fire service.

The Charles County Fire & EMS Cadet Program has proven to be an incredible opportunity for young men and women interested in the fire and EMS profession. Over the last 30 years, this program has helped launch the careers of many of our members, with numerous graduates going on to obtain career positions in the fire and EMS service.

Please join us in congratulating Antoine and Grady on this outstanding accomplishment and wishing them continued success as they continue serving the citizens of our community.

Interested in becoming part of the tradition? We are always looking for dedicated volunteers to join our team.
