🌦️ June 17 Weather Update: Storm Out, Heat Moving In

Tropical Storm Arthur has moved through our area, but a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Brazoria, Galveston, and Chambers counties and coastal waters. Wind gusts of 40–60 mph are still possible near the coast, but conditions will continue improving this evening.

☀️ As we head into the next few days, dangerous heat is expected across Southeast Texas. With high moisture levels, heat index values in La Marque are forecast to reach 108–114°F through Friday.

⚠️ Stay Safe:
Stay hydrated
Limit outdoor activity, especially during peak heat hours
Check on elderly neighbors and those without adequate cooling

💡 Earlier today, we experienced periods of heavy rain and a few isolated power outages, but overall conditions remained stable and no road closures have been reported.

TxDOT crews are working on state roadways, while City of La Marque teams are preparing city streets. Across the region, municipalities are taking action in advance of expected weather impacts. Please use caution if you must be on the road — and stay safe.

TxDOT maintenance crews spent yesterday and today clearing drains and preparing for the expected rain storms that will impact the area over the next several days. A few inches of rain coming in quickly can impact some drainage systems and this is why it’s very important to stay weather aware. Always avoid high water! We observed too many people taking chances yesterday and getting stuck in high water. It’s not worth it. Keep safe today.

Weather Update from Chief Merryman, La Marque Office of Emergency Management 3:30 p.m. June 16, 2026

The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for coastal Galveston County, a Coastal Flood Warning for the Bolivar Peninsula, and a Coastal Flood Advisory for Galveston Island from 7:00 pm CDT 6/16/2026 through 7:00 pm CDT 6/17/2026. The best chance of life-threatening flooding is possible through at least Thursday.

Potential Tropical Cyclone One (PTC ONE)
The National Hurricane Center has initiated advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone One (PTC One), currently tracking northeast along the Texas coast.

OUR FORECAST (La Marque Area)
Rainfall: 2–4 inches expected tomorrow, with isolated higher amounts possible
Wind gusts: 25–30 mph
Heavy rainfall rates are possible, especially if the forecast changes and it tracks closer to the coast.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO UNDERSTAND
Do not get distracted by whether this system is classified as a tropical depression or tropical storm — that classification is irrelevant to our threat. This is first and foremost a significant rainstorm. The greatest risk to La Marque is tropical rainfall, and how much we receive depends almost entirely on where the center of this system tracks:

If PTC One stays offshore → lesser rainfall impact for La Marque. This is the current forecast.
IF PTC One drifts northward toward the coast → greater potential for heavy, flooding rainfall

CITY OPERATIONS
The City of La Marque will operate on a normal business schedule. A limited number of outdoor events have been canceled due to rain.

Avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas during periods of heavy rain

Do not drive through flooded roadways — turn around, don't drown

Register for emergency alerts at alerts.cityoflamarque.org

Monitor the City website's, and the City's page for updates

Check weather.gov/houston and hurricanes.gov for the latest NWS information

We will continue to monitor conditions and issue updates as the situation develops.

The City of La Marque Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring a significant and potentially life-threatening weather event unfolding over the next 3–4 days. We are facing a dual flood threat this week.

THREAT #1 – TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY (Frontal Rainfall)
A weak frontal boundary moving into our region today through Tuesday will serve as a trigger for showers and thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall a distinct possibility. Flash flooding in low-lying and urban areas is possible during this period.

THREAT #2 – WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY (Tropical Disturbance)
The more significant concern is a slow-moving tropical disturbance expected to approach and impact the region from Wednesday, potentially lingering through Friday. This system will surge deep tropical moisture into the area, creating conditions capable of extremely high rainfall rates and serious, potentially life-threatening flooding.

IMPORTANT: At this time, forecasters cannot pinpoint exactly where the highest rainfall totals from this tropical disturbance will fall. All areas of La Marque and the surrounding region should prepare as though they may be in the bullseye.

The US National Weather Service Houston-Galveston Texas has issued a Flood Watch for all of Southeast Texas through Thursday morning. Rainfall totals of 4–7 inches are expected region-wide through early Thursday, with isolated amounts of 10–15 inches possible. Rainfall rates of 2–5 inches per hour are possible during the most intense periods.

• Sign up for emergency alerts at alerts.cityoflamarque.org and monitor the city's homepage at cityoflamarque.gov
• Avoid driving through flooded roadways – Turn Around, Don't Drown
• Be prepared to move vehicles and valuables to higher ground
• Have multiple ways to receive warnings (phone, NOAA Weather Radio, TV)
• Check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those with mobility limitations
• Have a go-bag and know your evacuation route

Please see the attached graphics from NWS Houston/Galveston for the latest rainfall forecasts, flood watch coverage, and wind threat information.

The City of La Marque Emergency Management Office will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as conditions evolve. Stay weather aware and be prepared to act quickly.

Please stay weather aware.
