The La Junta Police Department would like to make the public aware of a safety concern we have recently observed within our community.

The stop sign located at US Highway 50 and Dalton Avenue has been causing some confusion for motorists. We have observed vehicles traveling northbound on Dalton Avenue stopping at the sign and then proceeding into the merge lane to travel east on US Highway 50.

That stop sign is intended for traffic crossing into or turning onto the westbound lanes of US Highway 50, not for vehicles entering the eastbound merge lane.

Due to this confusion, officers have observed several near-miss traffic incidents at this intersection. We ask that motorists use caution, pay close attention to traffic control devices, and be aware of the proper traffic flow in this area.

We appreciate the community’s cooperation in helping keep our roadways safe.
