Based on his just-released book Dead Air: The Night Orson Welles Terrified America, William Hazelgrove uses the actual broadcast and many media stories to detail the great Halloween hoax of 1938. That’s when 23 year-old Orson Welles broadcast to the world that Martians had landed in New Jersey and were exterminating humans with heat ray guns and poisonous gas. The coast-to-coast terror takes viewers on a wild ride through America as people run for the hills and run out of restaurants, theatres, and churches believing the world had ended. Includes Q&A.

🧡💙 📣Calling all Chicago Bears fans! 🧡💙

With the recent resurgence of the Chicago Bears (but no Super Bowl championships since the 1985 season), fans may not remember that the Bears were once the dominant team in the National Football League. From 1921 through 1946, the Bears won seven NFL titles. Author Joe Ziemba will discuss those glory years of the Bears, including newly released original team records from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He will focus on the club’s efforts to remain competitive while dealing with meager attendance, the Depression, owner squabbles, and World War II.

From on-field riots to surprisingly low player salaries, to a bitter rivalry with the neighboring Chicago Cardinals, the Bears still managed to survive those challenges and become one of the most valuable franchises in today’s NFL. Rare photos, early team travel itineraries, and private correspondence from co-owners George Halas and Dutch Sternaman will be highlighted in this informative-and often wacky-presentation!

What better way to celebrate National Comic Book Day on September 25 than to join us on September 26!

Have you ever wondered how to create your own graphic novel?, Or what even is a graphic novel (or comic book)? Sean Ryan, author of the new graphic novel Xanar & Mr. Tuxedo, will tell the story of graphic novels and walk you through the process of how they are made from idea to script to art.

Sean Ryan has worked in comics for over 20 years. He was an editor at both Marvel and DC Comics. He has written comics for Marvel and DC, including a New York Times Best Selling volume of New Su***de Squad. Most recently, his middle grade graphic novel, Xanar & Mr. Tuxedo is now available.

Read to the Pets is back!

Beginning or independent readers can practice reading aloud to one of the pets from the Hinsdale Humane Society’s Therapaws Pet Therapy! This program will take place in person at the library. Each child will be given a 15-minute time slot between 6:30-7:30 p.m. Time slots will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis and we will notify you of that time slot via email.
