We Remember - 9/11
Nearly 3000 people died on 9/11, including 343 FDNY Firefighters, 1 NY Fire Patrol member, 71 Police Officers, 55 Military Members, and over 2,600 civilians. Thousands if not millions, were also directly impacted by the events; families, friends, co-workers and others. Impacts still continue today. Beyond the emotional toll, there have been an additional 4,300 related deaths recorded, including 438 FDNY members. More people have now died since the events, than on the actual day. Thousands of FDNY members and others present or working at ground zero have been diagnosed with 9/11 illnesses, including 4000 FDNY members currently battling cancer.

To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Village will host a memorial ceremony at Village Hall (447 N. Catherine Avenue) this Friday, September 11, beginning promptly at 8:45 a.m. The ceremony will take place in front of Village Hall; however, in the event of inclement weather, it will be moved inside Fire Station #1 in the apparatus bay.

The program will include remarks and a moment of reflection. All community members are welcome as we honor and remember the lives lost on this day 25 years ago.

A brief ceremony will be held at 8:45 am at our Village Hall complex, in remembrance of the 25th Anniversary of the attacks on our nation, and in honor of those lost and affected by these events. All community members are welcome to attend.

Last Friday we had the pleasure of having Retired Firefighter Victor Martinka and his family stop by. Vic had the opportunity to pin his retirement badge on our recently reimagined Retired and Honored Members recognition board. Thank you to Vic and family for coming out and for your service to the Village!

Make sure you have operating Carbon Monoxide alarms in your home. Although natural gas generators usually emit less CO than gasoline or diesel generators, they can create elevated CO levels in your home if run for extended periods adjacent to air intake vents and open windows, depending up atmospheric conditions.

At 1:35 pm today, we responded to a fire outside Arbor Animal Hospital at 14 E. 31st St. It appears a utility pole with two transformers on it, along with three primary power lines, failed and fell into the rear parking lot. When the pole failed, oil spilling from the transformers ignited, and the burning oil ran down the parking lot driveway along the Animal Hospital. The fire ignited and destroyed four vehicles in the parking lot of the adjacent office building, located at 48 E. 31st. St. The alarm was elevated to “full-still” based upon the volume of fire and proximity of the buildings to the fire. The animal hospital, BP and office building were evacuated. Firefighters’ initial efforts to extinguish the fire were hampered by the downed live electrical lines which appeared to be involved in the fire. Firefighters repositioned their hose lines and were able to safely knock down the fire in several vehicles until ComEd could arrive and make the area safe. Firefighters then extinguished the remaining fire in the vehicles and transformers.
There were no reported injuries to people or animals. As of this evening, ComEd is currently on-site repairing damage. They have also worked to clean up the area, including the remaining spilled mineral oil from the transformers. There is no estimated dollar amount for the loss, but four vehicles were destroyed, and there is damage to driveway and parking pavement, and some concrete. Power has been restored to the office building, and the BP is now open operating on power from a mobile generator. We thank our mutual-aid partners for assistance during this event.
