Join us at the Cook Memorial Library on March 5 at 5:30 pm to learn more about the Winter Carrot Project. This community science project guides gardeners through the process of planting, growing, and harvesting winter carrots in Union County.

A few of the 2025 participants will join us to share their experience. You'll learn a little bit about winter gardening, as well as how you can get involved with this community science project, made by Union County gardeners for Union County gardeners. And we'll have carrot samples from our February harvest! 🥕

Bringing a piece of the garden inside for our meeting tonight. A new year of Master Gardener volunteering has begun! We’re excited to provide our community with more opportunities to learn about gardening (& trouble-shoot problems).

Union County is not offering a training this year, but if you can’t wait to get involved, you can join the Baker County training (remotely, or in person as much as you are able) and earn your volunteer hours here in Union County. Interested? Contact Sarah at the Union County Extension Office to get started. Baker’s training starts in Jan 28, so don’t delay!

Last night we celebrated our Master Gardeners’ accomplishments! As a whole, our group completed over 300 hours of volunteer work, bringing garden education to our community—including this beautiful demonstration plot at the La Grande Community Garden. This year, five new MG’s earned their certification and two recertified. Our little team is growing!

In July, it looked like we had forgotten our veggie plot at the community garden because it was totally empty. By late August, it was filling in with these cold hardy veggies.

We harvested from our kale and carrot patches for this celebration dinner. Thanks to for dressing them up into absolute deliciousness! It is such a fun way to commemorate all the hard work that went into growing them.

Congrats to the Union County MG Volunteers! 🎉

Last call for winter carrot growers!

The second annual Union County Winter Carrot Project is now underway! This community science project invites local gardeners to grow carrots for winter harvest and record some data. The carrot planting window is July 20 - August 10.

Growers learn about winter vegetable gardening, get to practice it in their own garden, receive support from a community of fellow carrot growers and Extension staff, and they get to keep all of their carrots! If this sounds like something you would like to try, sign up here: https://forms.gle/6Bh5ZExPv9CAyrS26

We will mail remaining seeds out on July 29. Participation is free!

There is still time to sign up for the 2025 Winter Carrot Project! This community science project helps you grow carrots for winter harvest in your own garden, and helps the Union Co Master Gardeners learn more about growing winter vegetables in our region.

Celebrating World Bee Day with an update from our mini pollinator garden. We put these perennials in last spring and they’re already bursting with beautiful blooms! Scroll back to see the monoculture (aka dwarf broom) we pulled out to increase the diversity and bloom season of this garden.

Inspired by the Pollinator Garden Design for East of the Cascades flyer (available at the extension office and any time we have an outreach table - find us next at the May 31 LG farmers market), our garden is here to show that you don’t need a lot of space to make an impact.

The rules are simple: choose plants that feed native pollinator species and keep the blooms coming spring until fall! We’re not done planting yet — we’ll be adding more summer & fall bloomers this year to feed pollinators throughout the year.

What is your favorite pollinator plant?

Happy Earth Day! The Union Co Master Gardeners are joining a statewide OSU project called Garden Future. It's gathering observations from people all over the state about how your gardens are changing. Climate change is already transforming the way we garden. From shifting growing seasons to unpredictable weather, Oregon gardeners are seeing these changes firsthand. Help us by sharing what you've seen (let's represent, Union County!).

Specifically:
- Are you noticing changes in your garden that you believe are connected to climate change?
- What changes have you made in your gardening practices because of climate change?
- What resources do you need to better adapt your garden to a changing climate?

You can submit your answers online (beav.es/gardenfuture) or meet us at an upcoming event! If you answer the questions, you get a free garden future poster (Union County online answerers, send an email to sarah.west(at)oregonstate.edu to claim yours!).

We'll be at the Earth Day Cleanup event in Cove on April 26 with resources for adapting your garden to warmer, drier conditions, as well as info on supporting pollinators with your plant choices--and more! See the last image for all the event details, and be sure to rsvp!
