Elder abuse is any action, or failure to act, that causes harm or distress to an older adult. It can take many forms, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, abandonment, and sexual abuse.
Unfortunately, elder abuse often happens at the hands of someone the older adult knows and trusts. Many cases go unreported due to fear, isolation, dependence on the abuser, or concerns about losing independence.
Warning signs may include:
β’ Unexplained injuries
β’ Sudden changes in mood or behavior
β’ Poor hygiene or unmet care needs
β’ Unusual bank account activity or missing possessions
β’ Withdrawal from family, friends, or activities
Everyone deserves to age with dignity, respect, and safety. By learning the signs and speaking up when something doesn't seem right, we can help protect older adults in our communities.
π If you or someone you know may be experiencing abuse, support is available. Together, we can create communities where older adults are valued, respected, and safe.
