Swirls of ink. Curious minds. Lots of experimenting.

Students in Heidi Hanneman's art classes at Hamilton Elementary School and SOTA 1 La Crosse recently had the chance to learn from local artist Dawn Tevis during a special artist-in-residence experience exploring Suminagashi, an ancient Japanese art form known as "floating ink."

As ink drifted across the surface of water, students watched patterns take shape and transformed them into one-of-a-kind prints. Some attempts turned out exactly as planned. Others took a few tries. Students made adjustments, tested new ideas, and discovered something new with each print they created.

Experiences like this give students the chance to connect with artists in our community, explore art forms from around the world, and see creativity in action. They also remind us that learning often comes from experimenting, revising, and a willingness to try again.

A heartfelt thank you to local artist Dawn Tevis for sharing her talents with our students, to the SOTA I Steering Committee for supporting this opportunity, and to art teacher Heidi Hanneman for helping bring this unique experience to life for students at both Hamilton and SOTA I.

The smiles, surprises, and beautiful creations along the way made for a pretty special few days.

Nothing says "last week of school" quite like the annual Staff vs. 5th Grade Kickball Game at Hamilton Elementary School.

There were booming kicks, close plays, questionable calls (depending on who you ask), and plenty of laughs as students and staff took the field for one of Hamilton's favorite end-of-year traditions.

Moments like these make memories and bring people together, celebrate a year of growth, and create the kinds of experiences students carry with them long after elementary school. Once again, the kickball field became a place for connection, teamwork, school pride, and a whole lot of fun.

Great things happen here every day.

SOTA 1 La Crosse students took the stage at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s beautiful Toland Theater for their Informance. The annual tradition celebrates creativity, growth, expression, and joyful learning.

Kindergarten through fifth-grade students shared their learning through music, dance, and visual art, giving families and guests a chance to experience the incredible work happening in our classrooms every day. Students spend months creating, practicing, encouraging one another, and working through those nervous-but-excited moments that come with stepping onto a big stage.

This year’s celebration carried even more meaning as SOTA I honored 30 Years of Wonder, recognizing the vision, dedication, and community spirit that have shaped the school over the past three decades.

Experiences like this help students discover their voice, connect with others, and see what is possible when learning and creativity come together. Opportunities to perform on a real stage in a professional theater setting are powerful moments for kids, and they are possible because of strong community partnerships.

Thank you to our incredible students for sharing your talents and heart, to our families for your support and encouragement, to our dedicated staff for creating meaningful experiences for kids, and to UW-La Crosse for helping make this memorable performance possible.

Great things happen every day here.

Original stories. Original scripts. Original laughs.

At Emerson Elementary School’s annual Storyfest, our third graders took ideas from their own imaginations and turned them into live performances for family and friends. From writing fractured fairytales and campfire stories to creating costumes, props, lyrics, and scripts, students led every part of the process together.

This year’s stories explored how things move, thrive, and survive in the La Crosse community and how storytelling helps us connect with what matters most. Audiences traveled through time in “Back in My Day,” explored storytelling through technology and Reading Rainbow, discovered creative Pourquoi tales, and shared plenty of smiles along the way.

Storyfest is one of the many experiences that make learning in the School District of La Crosse so special. Students build confidence, creativity, teamwork, communication skills, and real connections with one another and their community. Our staff helps bring these opportunities to life every day because we believe kids learn best when they create, collaborate, and share their voices.

If you’re looking for a school district where students are encouraged to discover who they are, where creativity is celebrated, and where great things happen every day, the School District of La Crosse is the place to be.

Baseball Day at Spence Elementary School brought big smiles, lots of laughter, and unforgettable memories to some of our youngest learners.

4K preschoolers and kindergartners spent the day learning hitting, throwing, and base running skills alongside varsity players from the La Crosse Central High School baseball team. From first swings to running the bases, students experienced the joy of trying something new while building connections with older student role models.

The day also included ice cream, water spray cooldowns, and plenty of fun on a warm summer-like day. What made it truly special, though, was seeing students from different schools and grade levels come together as one community.

These are the kinds of experiences our kids remember. They build confidence, belonging, friendships, and pride. In La Crosse, great things happen when students lift each other up.

Great things happen every day here.

A big congratulations to La Crosse Logan High School junior Maria Weber for being named the winner of the Congressional Art Competition for Wisconsin’s Third District! 🎨

Maria’s colored pencil triptych — a three-panel artwork that tells one story across three connected drawings — was inspired by the simple, meaningful moments she shares with her dog. Her piece will now be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the next year alongside student artwork from across the country. What an incredible honor and opportunity.

Experiences like this remind us how powerful the arts can be for students. Through opportunities to create, connect, and share their voices, our students discover confidence, purpose, and the impact their stories can have far beyond the classroom. We’re proud to see La Crosse students represented on a national stage and grateful for the community partnerships and programs that help make opportunities like this possible.

Maria was also recently selected as a paid artist for this summer’s Artspire La Crosse ChalkFest.

A huge congratulations to Maria on this well-deserved recognition, and a big thank you to Logan art teacher Allecia Kruser for the encouragement, creativity, and support she brings to students every day.

What an incredible night at the Rivoli Theatre.

Students from La Crosse Polytechnic officially premiered their original documentaries as part of our first-ever partnership with PBS Wisconsin Education Youth Media. The result was something truly special for our students, staff, families, and community.

Over the course of the quarter, students immersed themselves in the full documentary production process, researching local stories, conducting interviews, filming, editing, and ultimately sharing their work on the big screen for a live audience.

A heartfelt thank you to Nick, Ian, and the entire PBS Wisconsin Education team for sharing your time, expertise, heart, and resources with our students throughout this entire experience.

Thank you as well to all of our local and broader community participants who trusted our students with their stories and helped bring these documentaries to life.

We’re also grateful to the team at the Rivoli Theatre and Pizzeria for hosting such a memorable premiere experience for our students and families.

And special thanks to Nell Saunders-Scott from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation for helping create the initial connection between our district and the late Jon Miskowski, former Director of Television for PBS Wisconsin. Without that connection and Jon's incredible generosity of spirit, this opportunity may never have happened.

We are honored to have been part of this experience and proud of the meaningful work our students created through storytelling, collaboration, and community connection.

Stay tuned this summer for a behind-the-scenes video project taking a deeper look at the journey, the partnerships, and the student experience behind this incredible opportunity.

Double takes were happening all over Southern Bluffs Elementary this week.

As part of a favorite Teacher Appreciation Week tradition, second-grade students in Casey Scheuerell’s art classes created “half face” portraits of staff members throughout the school, carefully drawing the missing half by hand and matching every detail they could, right down to the shading and expressions.

The hallway reactions? Equal parts laughter, surprise, and “Wait… is that me?!”

Projects like this give kids the chance to create something deeply personal for the adults who cheer them on every day. It’s one more example of the meaningful, hands-on experiences happening in La Crosse classrooms every day.

Huge thanks to Casey and to every teacher and staff member who make Southern Bluffs and our district such a fun, welcoming place for kids to learn and grow. Safe to say a few staff members may be framing these portraits for years to come.
