129 Vehicles Protected at Our Catalytic Converter Etching Event

Today, Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station partnered with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Vehicle Theft Task Force to host a Catalytic Converter Etching Event at La Cañada High School in City of La Cañada Flintridge.

During the event, technicians etched the catalytic converters of 129 vehicles with unique identifying numbers. This simple but effective theft-prevention measure helps deter thieves and can assist law enforcement in identifying and returning stolen catalytic converters that are later recovered during criminal investigations.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and took proactive steps to help protect their vehicles from theft.

While we do not have any specific details to announce at this time, we hope to host another catalytic converter etching event in the future and will share information as it becomes available.

Thank you to the Vehicle Theft Task Force and all of the personnel who helped make this event a success.

Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station is actively recruiting for the next LASD Explorer Academy!

The Explorer Program provides young adults ages 14–19 with hands-on exposure to law enforcement, leadership development, teamwork, public speaking, and real-world problem-solving skills. Explorers receive training in laws, report writing, searching and handcuffing techniques, traffic stops, domestic violence calls, active shooter scenarios, and other law enforcement operations.

The next Explorer Academy is scheduled to begin around August 15 and will run through December at the STARS Center in Whittier, with training held every Saturday. Upon graduation, Explorers will be assigned to Crescenta Valley Station.

In addition to training, Explorers assist at community events, participate in ride-alongs with deputies, build lasting friendships, and gain valuable experience that benefits them regardless of their future career path. Many former Explorers have gone on to military service, prestigious colleges, and careers in law enforcement.

Applicants must:

California E-Bike & E-Moto Update (Effective January 1, 2026)

Not every electric two-wheeler is legally considered an e-bike in California.

To qualify as an electric bicycle, a vehicle must:
✅ Have fully operable pedals
✅ Have a motor rated at 750 watts or less
✅ Meet Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 e-bike requirements

A vehicle is NOT an e-bike if it:
❌ Exceeds 750 watts
❌ Can be modified to exceed legal e-bike limits
❌ Travels faster than legal limits on motor power alone
❌ Has had its pedals removed
California has also created a new category called an “Off-Highway Electric Motorcycle” (e-moto). These vehicles are designed primarily for off-road use, do not have pedals, and are not permitted to be operated on public roads as electric bicycles.

Important reminders:
• Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 years old.
• Helmets are required for all Class 3 riders and passengers.
• Legal e-bikes do not require a driver’s license, registration, license plates, or insurance.
• Law enforcement may impound certain electric vehicles that do not meet California’s e-bike definition and are being operated unlawfully.

Before riding, make sure your vehicle actually meets California’s legal definition of an electric bicycle. Many high-powered electric motorcycles and modified bikes do not qualify, even if they are commonly referred to as “e-bikes.”

Community Academy Underway at Crescenta Valley Station

Last night, Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station kicked off the first session of our six-part Community Academy series with a group of more than 20 community members eager to learn more about their Sheriff’s Department.

Captain Ryan A. Vienna welcomed the participants and provided an overview of Crescenta Valley Station, how the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department operates, our rank structure, and what participants can expect throughout the course. Following the presentation, attendees were given a tour of the station to gain a behind-the-scenes look at our operations.

Over the coming weeks, participants will continue their journey through the Community Academy, learning about topics such as investigations, Montrose Search and Rescue, custody operations, and other specialized functions within the department. Participants will also have the opportunity to tour a Sheriff's custody facility and experience a patrol ride-along.

We are excited to share this educational experience with our community and help build a greater understanding of the services we provide.

Due to the overwhelming interest in this year's program, we are unable to accept any additional participants at this time. We appreciate the community's enthusiasm and encourage those interested to watch for future Community Academy opportunities.

Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station to Host Catalytic Converter Etching Event

Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Vehicle Theft Task Force invite residents to attend our Catalytic Converter Etching Event on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM at La Cañada High School, located at 4463 Oak Grove Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. The event will take place in the south portion of the school's front parking lot.

This event is part of the Sheriff's Department's ongoing efforts to combat catalytic converter thefts throughout Los Angeles County.

Participants will have their catalytic converters etched with a unique identifying number at no cost. Etching serves as a theft deterrent and can assist law enforcement in identifying and returning stolen catalytic converters that are later recovered during criminal investigations.

The event is free and open to the public.

We encourage community members to take advantage of this opportunity to help protect their vehicles and reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of catalytic converter theft.

For more information, please e-mail our Community Relations Team at [email protected].
