Swinomish Dental at the American Dental Therapy Association Conference (ADTA)

The annual ADTA conference themed “Rooted and Rising: Dental Therapy Education, Identity & Opportunity” was held in Detroit this summer. Swinomish and dəxʷx̌ayəbus staff made a presentation about the beginnings of the Swinomish dental therapy program, and shared details about staffing integrations, successes, and lessons learned.

The presenters included dəxʷx̌ayəbus Dental Therapy Education Program Director Dr. Warren and Swinomish Dental stars Jessica Ortez, Asiah Gonzalez, Keana Cruse, and Tamara Holmes.

The Swinomish Dental team hosted an exhibitor “Rethink Your Drink” table where they shared information and organic nettle mint and rose mint teas and goodies. They also participated in continuing education courses, which provided valuable education and connection, as well as the right environment to share ideas between others in the dental therapy community.

In Their Own Words: Swinomish Youth Club News
Excerpt from the February 1967 Swinomish Seagull

The Swinomish Youth Club officers, Glen Edwards, Rick Williams, Patricia Day, and Greg “Louie” Edwards, spent Wednesday, February 15, touring the Washington State Capitol in Olympia. Jack Willmoth drove Claude Wilbur’s station wagon, as the Bronco is being repaired. The group left the reservation about 9 a.m.

Upon arriving at the Capitol, the group heard Governor Daniel J. Evans speak to a group of students. He commented that there was more legislation being passed now than in previous years.

The Governor’s office was then toured along with the Press Room, where later the group observed Governor Evans in a press conference. Next, the House of Representatives was visited. Here, the group watched legislation being passed on the Driver Education Policy. The group then passed on to watch legislation being passed in the Senate Chamber. Our guide arranged a brief meeting with Representative Duane Berentson, in which he greeted the group and talked with them for a few moments. Then it was on to the Temple of Justice, where the five saw the Supreme Court in the middle of a case involving the state.

A day full of state government, new ideas, important people, marble buildings, and tired feet, the group made their return trip back to the reservation.
