Trump is taking credit for a 20% increase in farm income that was largely driven by an aid package passed during the Biden administration. But even billions in aid cannot make up for the tough times that Trump has created for farmers.

Bailouts won’t fix farming, but real reform will.

The Republican government of Florida does not seem to understand that it is not doing farmers or consumers any favor many delaying a transition to renewable energy alternatives to fossil fuels.

The Iran war has increased the cost by 44%, has by 33%, and nitrogen fertilizer by 33%.

Our state and federal governments should be investing money in science and engineering to drive down the cost of renewable energies and to develop options for safe, Gen IV nuclear power, rather than padding the profits of the fossil fuel companies through windfall profits from the war.

Since the USA is energy self sufficient, the war induced shortages should not be impacting US prices. But the international market nature of US prices is delivering staggering profits to oil and gas companies.

Republicans are content to allow this at the expense of farmers and all other sectors of our economy.

The sweeping new law enshrines farmers' use of gas-powered equipment and weakens protections for conservation lands, locking the state's climate-battered ag sector into fossil fuel dependence.

The consolidation of the meat packing industry is a major topic of discussion in agricultural circles. Florida is primarily a cow-calf state, meaning that most (80 to 90%) of Florida calved are shipped to feedlots in the other states. But there are some finished cattle ranchers in our state handling a significant fraction of Florida's approximately 780,000 calves per year. These are spread over 15,000 producers. Florida is the 9th largest cattle state in the nation..

The US and Europe have pursued different paths, but both involve the industrialization of the agricultural sector to meet ever increasing demand for food.

Why did Europe build massive greenhouse systems for vegetables while the United States never did? In southern Spain, an area known as the “sea of plastic” pr...

The US-Iran War is spiking nitrogen fertilizer costs for US and global farmers as they approach the spring planting season in the northern hemisphere. While 20% of global crude and LNG pass through the Strait of Hormuz, 30 to 35% of all nitrogen fertilizers pass through the same choke point. Another 10% of nitrogen fertilizers traditionally come from Russia as a co-product of the natural gas industry. A similar fossil fuel cost dynamic is what sparked the violent Arab Spring in 2010-2011. We cannot know what impacts might result in the US and other nations from a new agricultural and energy cost spike.

New Democratic Leadership for Florida's Agricultural Communities

Join us in supporting Democratic candidates and advancing wise, forward-looking agricultural policies.

Agriculture—the responsibility of feeding people—has always been the most essential of all human endeavors. That truth remains unchanged today.

With more than 8 billion people on our planet, Florida and the United States must continue to lead in producing the food the world needs while advancing the agricultural innovation that makes such production possible. Our farmers and agricultural communities carry the profound responsibility of helping nourish a growing global population, enabling people everywhere to focus their energies on the many other priorities that sustain and enrich our societies.

At the same time, we must ensure that food and agricultural products are produced in ways that strengthen the businesses and families who take on this vital work, while protecting the land, water, and natural systems upon which all life—and traditional agriculture—ultimately depends.

Australian farmers thanked those US farmers who voted for Trump. Our loss was their gain. American farmers need to vote for candidates who will deliver balanced, long-term agricultural policies.

The challenge is to maintain a mission of feeding people through good agriculture without damaging other elements of our society?

Florida farmers and farm communities either got hood-winked by Trump or they made a bad bet that subsidies would offset the negative tariff impacts of a second Trump presidency.
