Boozhoo!

The KBIC has officially begun its seasonal beach monitoring at the following locations:

First Sand Beach
Zeba Boat Launch
Head of the Bay
Sand Point Campground
Sand Point Recreational Trail
Assinins

NRD technicians will collect surface water samples weekly to test for bacteria levels at local swimming areas. You can find the results on the KBIC NRD page and the MIEnviro Portal “Beach Guard” or click here https://mienviro.michigan.gov/nsite/beach/map/results .

If it becomes necessary to close a location at any time, the NRD will make every effort to inform the public as soon as possible. All beach closure announcements will be posted at the beach, on Facebook, on the radio, and on relevant websites.

Please remember to follow the “Leave No Trace” principle when visiting any beach or camping area. This means you should always take out what you bring in.

Miigwech, and happy swimming!

FYI community members,

From Wednesday, May 21st: Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a $50,000 grant to Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians, a $50,000 to Grand Portage Band of Minnesota Chippewa and $50,000 to Keweenaw Bay Indian Community for water quality monitoring at beaches so these tribes may notify the public if elevated levels of bacteria make swimming unsafe.

To be eligible for BEACH Act grants, states, Tribes, and territories must have coastal or Great Lakes recreational waters adjacent to beaches or similar points of access used by the public. They must also have a water quality standards program and EPA-approved numeric recreational water quality standards for coastal waters. Additionally, eligible entities must meet 11 performance criteria for implementing the monitoring, assessment, and notification components of their beach program. Each grantee receives an amount based on the length of the beach season, the number of miles of shoreline and the populations of coastal counties.

FYI community members,

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will conduct work in the Falls River (Baraga County) between June 2 and June 11, 2026 to estimate the abundance of sea lampreys. The information gathered will be used to determine the need for control measures.

Please join us for a lunch time meeting to discuss the ongoing cleanup effort.

We are also in search of any historical photographs that could help us determine the location of several structures that may need to be removed.
